And what 0-60 time has it got etc. And how come it was not fitted with a turbo charger, I don't get it because most diesel engines these days come with a turbo.

I think they are the 2.0L D arn't they? 71bhp 0-60 in 13.9 s and top speed of 103

Well all of the 1.3s are faster lol probably not any different on Fuel either!

Strictly speaking this was the CE100 series Corolla they had the older 2C series engine that was fitted to a number of older models, I dont think Toyota had ever heard of a turbo in those days  apart from a Landcruiser. They did put a turbo on later Carina models and it was a 2C-T. Emissions and power were not major considerations back in the 90's but a reliable diesel was what you got

Fascinating  Why do you think the 1300cc would be no more economical than the diesel though? Diesels are supposed to be more fuel efficient  I would be interested to know where you got those figures as well, cheers

Do you mean it was not the A.E.100 car? Wikipedia says the 1993-97 shape is called "A.E.100" which is different from what I was told on here. Multiple users have said on here that the 1993-97 body shape was A.E.101 for petrol and A.E.102 for diesel  Or are you just refering to the engine code :help: I wish Toyota used proper designations when they built those cars instead of the mess they made with all of these codes! So confusing!

About the turbo thingy, I find that strange because Fords of the same era had D.T. engines yet it seems from what you are saying that Toyota was somehow technologically inferior to the European manufacturers.

I must say, that thing was reliable as heck, my dad put more than 1/5 of a million miles on it and the engine was still going strong! It seems a shame that Toyota inadvertantly created a nice looking car yet didn't appreciate that fact. Thanks for the info

I get all my figures from http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/toyota

Then just choose ya car. Not always spot on and the older the car the less information they have about it..

You also can't search for cars by sa AE-100 you need to know what ya looking for. Diesel is so much more expensive now I rekon a nice 1.3 will be better to drive and as fule efficient as the 2.0L diesel overall

Back in the 90's Toyota didn't have such a large market share in Europe as they do today as the majority of sales were in America/Japan/Australasia, where on cars predominately they only used Petrol (and still today mostly). The European markets i.e France/Germany etc were buying a lot of Diesels in the early 90's and Toyota must have quickly put this 2.0L Diesel in the range as an attempt to compete, i am sure this engine came out of a van and was used in Forklift trucks. As Parts King says these were the days of the slow but totally reliable Diesels, not the modern fast and clean but not that reliable Diesels we have today.

The big change though was when emissions began being measured on CO2 as Diesel is lower.

You need a degree is BS to work out Toyota model codes but they are quite sensible when you get to know them

Toyota will never be technolgicaly inferior to Ford, IMHO, but at the time I suppose the C series engine suited it's worldwide sales policy. Nowadays it's all about emissions and consumption, something that didnt matter so much in the 90's

Kingo

EDIT

Funnily enuff, when the worldwide manufacturers were charged with lowering emissions on all cars by the end of the decade, they all decided to make massive efforts with diesel engines, would'nt be anything to do with those lower limits hey Cabcurtains? Or am I being cynical...........again

I ran both in 98-2000, the petols were and still are excellent, the 2.0 D never had a chance against the VAG Tdi and PSA TD/HDi's, just to slow, old fashioned and poor on fuel-Totally reliable though.

don't see why you quoted me on that one because i didn't say anything about the 2.0L HAVING to be fast!

Thanks :) That seems to have figures from the bug eyed Corolla though, not the nice shaped one that came before it :( I can only imagine though that if that one's diesel had only 71 brake then the 1993-97 Corolla diesel must have had even less

Edit: I have just seen that it has the same kind of odd displacement as the A.E.100 diesel (1975 cc) could it be the same one? And there are two reasons why the diesel will have an advantage over petrol:

1. It's an old diesel, so you can dump veggie in it

2. It's a diesel so although it is down on power, it will have more torque

Ok then www.Parkers.co.uk Go here and then click REVIEWS, then Facts and Figures, you can then either do new cars or older cars.

You mean the CE100 an AE100 is petrol

I think they both had the 2C engine

Ohhhh, right. So the letters signify the engine and the number signifies the body shape, yes?

Thats why I have one. Its the liftback version of yours and I have no probs running it on veggie. Totally reliable and masses of torque. Not too bad on fuel consumption either.
