Noise In Steering

I recently bought a used Yaris Verso automatic, low mileage. Amazing versatility of course! But I have noticed that there is a low level background noise during steering to left or to right. Sounds like a slight grating on something. Doesn't sound normal to me. Anyone else aware of this issue?

Hi, I don't wanna sound obvious, but it isn't just the power steering, is it?

There is usually a noise from that on most cars with power and if so, unless overly noisey, is quite normal. Some models may have less insulation in the car, thus making it seem noisier than other cars.

Try running the engine, bonnet open, window too. Give the steering a slight turn from outside the car, whilst listening out for the sound. If you hear it and it stops as soon as you let go of the wheel, it is probably just that.

Thanks for the suggestion. The noise did not come on when I applied your test. Here's a little bit more about it. Not a continuous noise: it can stay for a few seconds and then disappear. It's most noticeable - and persistent - when going round a corner, particularly at a low speed. I also hear it when I go over a bump - in which case it's short lived. I'm getting worried now! Grateful for any more ideas. Could it be something to do with the shock absorbers? The suspension on the Yaris Verso often gets panned!

Had another thought. I have heard that the trim pieces that go round the front brake discs get bent, say when getting a stone in or something. They then make a small grinding noise, most noticable when turning.

Take your front wheels off in turn.. May be easier with the front on axle stands, (loosen bolts first) and have a look at each of the trims to make sure they are not too close to the brake discs. They should bend quite easily so it is just a case of bending them until they don't foul the disc as you are driving. Give it a go as it will not cost anything to try.

CV Joint clicking? Quite common on old Yaris.
