After a cold start and about 10 minutes driving at speed 50-70 mph, the car will not accelerate and seems to hit a flat spot or limiter. Pressing the accelerator to the floor just kicks out smoke. Changing down then allows you to keep up a certain amount of torque and sometimes clears the problem. I have had the car on a diagnostic unit at a local garrage which shows no problems. I have checked for fuel leaks, have changed the fuel filter and run though some decent injector cleaner fluid in a full tank diesel. This fault tends to shows itself after 10 minutes (only at speed) and does not occur again until a start from cold. The car had no problems starting, running and has plenty of pull normally. I am very puzzled.

If you can replicate the fault why not see if the garage will let you take a mechanic out for 15 mins to show them what the car is doing.

If it only happens from a cold start after about 10 mins it sounds like the car has just reached working temp and is changing the idle speed from higher to lower revs. I can't think of any other process the car would go through from cold after 10 mins use apart from burning off deposits in the cat.

What part of the rev band does the flat spot occur in? Is it when you would expect the turbo to cut in? Do the revs continue to rise or is the ECU restritcing engine revs?

Thanks for the reply. Would you believe that since I posted the problem it has not happened again. The pen! is mightier than the sword!!

All I can think is that it was fuel related as I suspected and it has taken 3 tanks use to clear the problem out, along with the injector cleaner.

Andy verso,keep an eye on your intercooler/turbo pipes,had similar problem on my freelander td4,it too was intermitant,put it on the computer in march and found no faults,but on holiday in may it started again but worse than ever,had new pipes fitted,no more problems,like shat off a shovel. :lol:

It seems that the problem has not gone away, I took the car into a Toyota Main dealer where they test drove and put it on the diagnostic unit. They saw the problem and they were just baffled by what it was doing. The problem is now quite predictable and at slower speeds. After about 4 or 5 miles it is as if the fuel is being restricted and the car splutters for a few seconds. It then recovers for a brief time and it re-occurs. What changes are there in the fuel system when the car has warmed up? The problem never happens from a cold start-up so fuel contamination is unlikely.

could be scv...valves controlling the fuelling because in diesel engine the fuel pump runs at a constant rate those valves are needed to regulate the fuel supply. i think you can get replacement kits from the dealers

Thanks for fast reply! I'll try this after I change all filters. BTW, do you know part numbers for those valves?

Toyota say the scv cant be replaced, but the manufacture of the fuel pump will sell the correct one to you, i think Bosch make the fuel pump.

Had precisely this problem with my Verso. Went in to Toyota this week (after local diagnostics man showed up nothing). Fuel injector 1 and 6 were failing. 1100GBP to rectify. This is the second time the fuel injectors have failed, but I'm not sure if 1 and 6 were the culprits last time around. Last time it went into emergency mode (5mph).

No thats not quite right, they are also a Denso pump ;)

The SCV valves are not listed on the parts catalogue, they were not available as a seperate item, but a few years back they started to sell SCV valves as a kit. I should know, we sell dozens of them :eek:

It sounds from your symptoms like an SCV issue, but check out the obvious like fuel filter etc first

Hi I have exactly the same problem with my Verso. Did you get the problem sorted in the end? What was the true cause?
