Hi everyone,

Please forgive this rather long post.... :-)

My gf is thinking of getting the Aygo Blue, she only lives 20 minutes from work and it is nealry all town/country driving with a roughly 2 mile stretch of dual carriage way, and so the Aygo, seemed the perfect car. Cheap, reliable, economical etc.

She is however worried about 2 things..... no rev-counter, I believe they have stopped this, as the dealers (who could barely price me any accessories........ not even an alarm!!!!) didn't seem to know about it, I would persoanlly like one, but it is not a necessity to me (my van hasn't got one and you just get used to the noise of the engine, but she doesn't get that sort of thing..... ). And the upgrade pack, personally I think it is worthwhile, even if just for the airbags, as she hasn't driven for a while and I want her to be as safe as possible in it :-) But she's not sure. She wants no accessories other than that really (apart from the alarm which will bring the insurance down). Anyone recommend any extra's????

I also have one quick-q, does it have a fob operated locking system??? If not is this included in the alarm upgrade?? And is it possible to set the door locks to lock automaticlaly as you drive away???

The other thing is, ladies, anyone know a good insurer, either one that is just generally cheap or good for Toyota's/Lady drivers?? Chepest so far was Bell @ around 550 quid fully comp.

ATB & TIA,

Tom

I'm with Swift Cover for £250 fully comp. The price came down when I put my more experienced partner on it too!

I have had my licence since Sept 2002 though but it is my first car.

Hi,

Thanks for that, I thought about adding myself (but have one prang last year, not my fault, but it was listed as such :-( Wouldn't mind but they never paid out and so technically wasn't a claim either, useless NU). And so don't think it'll be much cheaper.

But I'll give swiftcover a try, they may get it down a bit. She's held her licence for about a year, but hasn't even got pass plus (I said she should have, but she reckons she's ok without it, ).

The specialist womens insurance seems to be the priciest so far, which is odd.

ATB,

Tom

EDIT!!!!!

By adding myself even with my claim, it brings her insurance down by 100 quid!!!!!!! Wow, thanks for encouraging me to try it :-)

Firstly you can get a rev counter from Peugeot dealers or online and fit it yourself. You will be looking at around £140. Here is a thread showing you which part number you will need and how to fit the rev counter.

The Blue already have airbags all round (i think without checking) so it is very safe and also scoring 4 stars Euro NCAP. The Aygo is equipped with standard immobiliser only so aftermarket alarm might be needed. The key fob is built into the key so there are no extra dangling fob and also the Blue comes with central locking. As for auto locking I doubt there is such feature on the Aygo. I always lock it manually which is a pain.

The Aygo Blue does indeed have 4 airbags.4* Euro-ncap score.

The rev counter has been covered as above.

An official Toyota alarm can be fitted if you desire(£220-230).The default setting for this alarm includes automatic door locking(if your car has central locking ie all Aygos other than basic spec). As soon as you turn the ignition on,the central locking activates.Conversly as soon as you turn the ignition off,the central locking opens the door. The Aygos with central locking have a remote fob. However if you get the Toyota alarm, you will get an additional fob that operates the alarm and central locking.

Other people have had aftermarket alarms fitted with good results.

PS,I am not so sure that having the alarm fitted will make much difference to the insurance, but it is always worth a try!

OUCH! 140 quid! Maybe I can haggle one into the deal, I'm going for fogs and bump strip anyways, and maybe some other bits ;-) If the blue has allround airbags, maybe I cna get a reduction in the price of the upgrade pack? :-)

The dealers agrees there is an alarm avaliable for the Aygo from toyota, but have no info on it....great when the guy selling the car, knows less than me about it, I have read reviews and write-ups (seems to be a 60:40 split, from the car is awful and the car is the best thing since wonderloaf, however I feel many expect too much from it...). The dealers however don't seem to have done this at all....sadly.

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks, I think thats quite a good deal for the alarm, but as you say I havn't seen it make much difference (it even going up in one case...bizarre to say the least.), however I like the autolock feature, something I miss on my civ, saved me once and now I'm paranoid about locking my car. So the upgrade, doesn't give you more airbags, so that was good of the salesman to tell me it did....... grrrrrr.

Thanks again,

Tom

I would check about the airbags as specs may have changed recently. When I bought the "Blue" in March the basic Aygo had 2 front airbags and anything else had 4 airbags.

The special editions have changed recently(a new Blue),so I don't know if the airbag configuration has changed.

My dealer seems to know almost nothing about the Aygo, I suppose they make little commision and so see no point in trying to sell them, maybe it's just me, but when I went to buy my Civic Type S GT (brand new), I was treated like dirt, as if 20k+++ on a car isn't anything...... :censor:

I'll see what I can find, do you guys have a toyota wiki??? any other Aygo sites????

Obviously a different system than the one you can et from Peugeot or Citroen then,

as those systems work on the ORIGINAL key-transmitter...

Perhaps it would be cheaper to get one from them then??? and code it into the Aygo??? (like you can with the Civ, from the Accord with keys etc.).

Just to clarify the airbag situation for everyone

The Aygo’s have the following

Basic has 2 air bags - drivers & passenger front

Aygo +, Black, Blue & Platinum have 4 airbags driver & passenger front & seat mounted side airbags

The upgrade pack which is only available on the new Aygo Blue & Platinum as an optional extra adds side curtain airbags bringing the total to 6 as well as adding VSC (Vehicle stability control) & TRC (Traction control) so if you really want to make the Aygo as safe as possible it may well pay to have this option, but it must be ordered as part of the new car & cannot be added once a vehicle is ordered. As for the lack of information it was only made available as an option in the UK this month.

I hope this clears up the confusion surrounding what is available

Brilliant, but they know nothing about any options :-) Sounds like a worthwhile upgrade especially on those super thin tyres.

Sounds like you need to visit a dealer who knows what they're on about and who want to sell you a car Tom??? The Aygo package called "Upgrade" is a £350 option and this is what the Toyota website says

AYGO Upgrade

Adds Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, side airbags, curtain airbags and two rear headrests

Sounds a bargain price to me when Auris was launced I seem to remember VSC was about £500 on its own!

At that price I would guess the Aygo already has most of the bits for VSC, it just needs to be "turned on". Maybe you need the extra sensors?

Presumably it's a front-axle only upgrade, as I don't think anybody makes VSC for drum brakes.

CSC, ESP, VSC and TC are allsystems that depend on ABS.

AFAIK ABS is compulsory on new vehicles in Europe,

so the Aygo has ABS all around, even on the rear drums.

Adding VSC and TC basically means running other

software on the ABS-ECU ans maybe some additional

sensors, but most hardware is allready there.

Some things also get combined by manufactors; in The Netherlands

it's impossible to order the Curtain Airbags without the A/C!
