Oil Usage

Hi guys

Re my previous post some time ago about my T Spirit Auris using oil. Have took it back several times now to Ron Brooks in Mansfield and they have been monitoring the oil level every 1000 miles. First 1000 miles it used o.5 litres. At this they said they spoke to Toyota technical who advised them to change the valve stem oil seals, which they did. I then did another 1000 miles and found the oil usage to be 0.3 litres. They then said, well it appears to be dropping down, do another 1000 miles and we will measure it again. I finished another 1000 miles last week and the oil consumption was 0.4 litres. Guy at Ron Brooks said he was going to speak to Toyota technical and get back to me. He hasn't done so far, but what he did say was that in the Auris hand book it says oil usage could be up to 1 litre per 1000 kilometres (about 650 miles). I suppose that is Toyota covering there backs. This is my fifth new Toyota, and so far none of the previous ones used any oil at all.

My question is, is any one else using any amount of oil in there Auris 1.6 petrol engine. Mine has done approximately 15,000 miles since new in 07, and we started to monitor the usage from about 12,000 miles.

how did you run in the engine - whats your driving style - how long is your average journey?

It is not only Toyota but almost every car manufacturer states in manual 1l/1000km (650 miles). It is a little crazy but you can do much about as it is "normal". If the engine is heavily loaded then it could be the case.

Well guys

Just to update you re the oil situation, Toyota have fitted a new short engine, new cylinder head and valves They obviously thought there was a problem. Now on my next 1000 miles. Hope this has cured it!!!

My one year old 1.6 TR does use more oil than my previous 53 reg 1.4 corolla which was purchased at 1 year old (which hardly used anything) - I have not calculated how much oil it is using but I can tell it is more than the corolla. I will monitor it though to make sure it does not get out of hand

It's well known that the Avensis and Corolla VVTi engines were known for burning oil and needing replacing, but I would have thought that they would have sorted it out in the Auris.

The very first of the VVTI 1.6 and 1.8 up until 02 burned oil. Toyota did a recall and all the short blocks were changed. Not a problem since

I run a 1.6 TR which has just done 9.5K miles. I have had to top the oil up with small amounts over the last 12 months. We became used to Japanese engines never using any oil over the years, but in recent times with multi valve engines and low viscosisty oils, we have seen ALL makes of cars use some oil. That is not to say there have'nt been problems, there have, but to use some oil between servicing is something you should get used to, most people never lift the bonnet from one year to the next and wonder why they get problems. Oil, air and fluid checks are an owners WEEKLY responsibility

They never did a recall but if you have an issue have a hunt around here for extended warranties
