What Car Should I Get For £1000 To £2000?

I guess it depends what you call 'too expensive to run'. Apart from the cost of any mods, MR2s are very cheap to run if you get a reliable one. I can't think of the last car I had that cost me less per year. And the depreciation is about zero so they're a steal really.

But if you want something more conventional then 90s Corollas and Starlets are almost bullet proof and very cheap to run. Fuel consumption is obviously better if you go for the smaller engine sizes and you should find that in your price range there are plenty of low mileage well looked after examples. If that's the sort of thing you're after then wait for a minter to come along. There was a Rollla at a garage local to us recently that was as good as new with airbags, sunroof, aircon, electric windows etc, very low mileage and still less than £2K. Lots of almost free motoring for whoever bought that.
