Had my 1.8 carina mot'd today, been told I have a leak from the rear of the engine

It drives ok, anybody shed some light as to why it is leaking, and what i should do ?

I suspect the engine has been replaced before i bought it, is this why engine is leaking oil ?

THanks

Check that it's leaking oil first. My knowledge is very limited and thought my Carina was leaking oil. It turned out to be fluid from the power steering as my steering rack was knackered. Replaced that and the problem went. When your engine is turning over turn your steering to full lock for a few seconds in either direction and if you hear a whining noise then it's probably that. I would have thought that the guy who MOT'd the car would have known where the leak was coming from though.

The first step should be to ensure beyond any doubt what fluid is left under your car.

Park it somewhere dry (or stick a flattened cardboard box under there it its raining),

then wait a good long while, and check what (if anything) comes out of there.

Use a combination of sight/smell and taste if you're really dedicated, and determine what

exactly is coming out of the engine.

Please report back with findings, and the good folk of the forum will share toughts on likely

causes once we know for sure what you are dealing with
