Aygo Clutch Problem

Hi,

I got my Aygo 1.0 on April 08.

Fuel economy is as promissed, but 2000km and 2 months after I have been noticing the following problems:

1)I have a click/clunk every time I press or depress the clutch

2)After driving through heavy traffic and warming up the clutch it is producing a strange sound whenever I depress the clutch at about 2/3 of the pedals drive. This sound is like a whistle that comes from a baddly adjust fan belt but I know that it comes form the clutch as I can reproduce it by entering 1st gear and depressing 2/3 of the pedal's drive.

3)Both seats are creating annoying squeeks and sounds like old wooden chairs.

4)There is a crack at the Alarm button in the console. I've been reading that this is common in many Aygos.

I have been a proud Starlet owner from 1996 to 2000, but now it seems to me that Toyota is lowering it's high quality standards. Did anybody notice these problems on his Aygo?

Hi Welcome to the Club

Most of the problems you have listed are common faults within the Aygo you are just unfortunate to have had all of them, your car is well within its warranty I have no doubt if you take it back to Mr T they will be more than happy to put things right :)

I had the same problem with my clutch, they just need to readjust the clutch, you'll reliase that the car moves off faster when they do this :D

Hi rickblainegr,

I have noticed the first thing you mentioned, recently, and i took my car to the dealer and did some kind of servising but the work they did didn't help. After I've talked to several people that have Aygos, I found out that all Aygos make that same noise (also the 107). And for the other sounds I haven't yet heard them and I hope I'll never do. :D

Bye.

I don't think that re-adjusting is the answer. This sounds to me like Mr T just pushed the problem under the carpet. I am not a mechanic but I have googled the problem and it's symptoms and tried to find out what could possibly be the cause.

Please read the following:

http://www.aa1car.com/library/2002/ic100237.htm

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/clutch2.htm

http://www.tpub.com/basae/93.htm

http://www.automotive-clutches.com/basic_clutch_info.html

The squeeking of the clutch most likely is caused by a bad pilot bearing or bushing.

I have made an appointment with Mr T and will come back to you regarding after I talked (mentioning all my concerns) with the appropriate personel.

Seems I came late to this, wish I had looked before. Have a 4 yr old Aygo and last week the clutch let me down, not worn, just broke, made a noise like glass grinding, all fixings had broken; sadly did not take it back to Toyota dealer as I was worried about driving any distance so took it to reputable local garage, who said they had not come across this in any car before, yet it seems that other Aygo owners know this problem only too well. Currently writing to Toyota about this although as I have had the Toyota clutch replaced with a non-Toyota clutch they dont want to know. Dont know the technical names, but even to me it seems a bit weird. I would be prepared to pay for a worn clutch but not one that broke!

Best bet is get it back in to the dealers when your car is still under warranty. You pay enough for these cars so you want them to be right. The dealers should be glad of the work too!!!

Interesting to note that Toyota are now offering 5 yr warranty on all new cars, wonder if it has anything to do with loss of faith earlier in the year with various recalls or am I being cynical?

Not being cynical Linus, that's exactly the reason according to industry experts. The other reason is that a little known South Korean company called Hyundai have been churning out some interesting and reliable cars recently all of which come with a 5 year warranty as standard and have been selling very well during and after the scrappage scheme.

Not a fan of the cars myself but most owners of them seem to be very happy - bit like Toyota owners were/still are?

Hi to everyone that is an Aygo owner.

I had some problems with the clutch and i would like to share them withe everyone.

So i took an Aygo a used one 29500km on the clock. I did in two months 1500km and i started hearing a grinding sound from the clutch.

So i took it to a non Toyota garage they took it apart and the problem was that the pilot bearing was broken and the case that holds the disk was broken too but from inside not the outside teethes. From inscide the is a ring where the disk is siting when you push the pedal down. So what we think is that the cable was too tight and the free play wasnt too much from the begining or hoever was driving before was holding his leg tou much one the clutch pedal so thats a reason that it got broken even thout its a comen problem on all aygos.

Now everything is new the disk case the disk and the pilot bearing but the problem that i have now is that i hear another sound when the pedal is not depressed but when i start depressing it tha sound stops. There are some ideas from what it could be but since ther are some abnormal and not usual things going on withe the Aygos clutch i think that sound could be anything so today i will take it to the garage to finde out whats that sound. I hope we will be able to find that out. Its like something is touching something else and when i press the pedal down its stops. Some people say it might be normal but since i never had another aygo i dont know if that sound is normal or not.

So please all Aygo owners that might be riading this can you chek on your car if you have any change in the sounds from the engine when you press the cluch pedal. So i am interested in a sound that will stop when you press the pedal down.

Thanks in advance

I have to say that my faith in Toyota has been shaken, having bought what I considered a fairly low mileage 3 year old car, in May 2009, it has cost me more in the last year than a much older Fiat Punto that I drove all over the country, filled the boot to bursting point. By comparison my Aygo has been clunky from when I first got it; thought it was me getting used to gear changing, but I can hear every rattle and noise from underneath the car. I would not buy another one. I understand they are only small cars which I celebrate, but the build just is not up to scratch.

My clutch has gone also at 35000 milea. Thank you for supplying the above information reference the TSB's. My car is just 4 years old. I have had cars before for 10 years and never had to replace the clutch. If Toyota are aware of the problem they should contribute to or pay all of the cost. I am so glad I found this forum. At least I cam not going to be palmed off with 'it's the way you drive' when I take it for its diagnostic test. Will keep you posted.

The new AYGO`s have a stronger clutch , being slightly bigger in size 900mm?

I had a ford focus before and that needed 3 wheel bearings and the ASB module failed and needed replacing. I dont think it was a bad car, I just had a bit of a lemon.

I have heard that resting your foot on the clutch pedal can wear out the clutch, the same as resting your hand on the gear stick can affect the gear box.

I think the gear and clutch is spot on, light and easy to change gear.

I posted my above post on the wrong forum page unfortunately. Spent yesterday researching the net. Somewhere on either Toyota Owners Club Forum or What Car readers pages, a poster has supplied details of all the TSB's listing problems with the Aygo clutches. Just google Aygo clutch problems and numerous entries come up. It is a manufacturing fault nothing to do with resting your foot on the clutch pedal. I have been driving for over 30 years and this is the first time I have ever had to replace the clutch on a car.

Hello to you all,

I bought my son an 2 1/2 year old Aygo 11 months ago from Inchcape.

my Sons Aygo has just developed a rattling noise at the clutch :crybaby: when he depresses the clutch, so i took it to a clutch and gearbox specialist just now Monday 22nd Aug who told me he has had numerous aygo's with the same complaint, re clutch noise.

He diagnosed the problem as the clutch metal springs failing and showed me an aygo clutch he had just replaced which had the broken metal springs.

He told me to check my warranty with inchcape before taking the car to them. He also warned me that Toyota are not acknowledging this problem.

My Son's car has done 34000 miles and was 3 years old 10 weeks ago. :censor:

He just had it MOT Thursday and it passed. :toast:

The inchcape warranty runs out 30-08-11. Do you think they will pay for replacement clutch if i take it to them tomorrow 22nd Aug 2011?

please advise as i have been quoted £400 to fit new clutch by the clutch and gearbox specialist...!!!

If Toyota/Inchcape wont replace clutch can someone tell me where to buy a decent clutch so i can fit it myself :yahoo: as i have only a pension.

Thank you for your patients while reading this post.

to the above yes they should replace this for you if you got a 12 month warranty with it...the clutches were changed to stronger ones used on the yaris its a very common problem its the three wee straps that snap off one by one...at home its prob a 3 hour job at my work we all get them done in around 1.5 hours..very simple to do and the gear box isnt heavy...you can carry it around with one hand..

you could take it in on the 30th and theyd do the warranty repair mate...

Ormi, thank you for the excellent advice and information.

Unfortunately Inchcape-Nottingham gave me advice which basically said I would have to pay £150 for them to strip the clutch down and find out what was wrong with it; I had already explained I had had the problem diagnosed by a specialist clutch and gearbox garage earlier and they had told me to go to Inchcape for the replacement under the warranty.

anyway following the diagnosis Inchcape would raise an online claim to the Warranty company for authorization for the replacement clutch if they deemed it appropriate having taken into account all the circumstances and having satisfied themselves that my son had complied with all the conditions of the warranty because the clutch was a ' Wearable Part ' and it would be up to their discretion to replace and fit a new one!!!

This was beginning to look like a lengthy process so I explained that we had no money and my son was taking the car with him on holiday next Friday 2nd September and had to have some form of guarantee that the Diagnosis cost of £150 would also be paid under the Warranty THE ANSWER WAS NO. I then explained that I could not leave the 'AYGO' for inspection until I got firmer answers and assurances regarding replacement and payment under the warranty because my son needed the replacement before his holiday, following further wrangling’s between us Inchcape told me to ring the Administrators of the Warranty on 0844 871 8024 and ask them to authorise the replacement clutch then come back or go elsewhere for the work to be done.

I did ring the Toyota Warranty Admin and was met by a very condescending employee who after listening to my saga advised me that I should take the car back to Inchcape and follow their advice following which a decision would be made following a normal on line claim by Inchcape. I said that was not good enough as he had given me no assurances as to diagnostic payment or infact any replacement clutch. He had merely reiterated what Inchcape had said. His reply to my dissatisfaction’s was ' we don’t just fillout blank cheques for people ' I was inwardly furious by now and politely said thank you and goodbye. Never will I buy another 'Toyota' again and I have had 5.

My son had another garage put in a new clutch today for £300 as he couldn’t bear the stress of around a £600 bill from Inchcape just before his holiday without some form of meaningful guarantees. The car was 3years old and 34000miles millage, my son has only driven 5000 miles in 11 months. Rant over, sorry.

contact toyota gb and complain what your dealer done was wrong and very bad if your car is under warranty you will never pay a diag fee also the problem is very very common....you didnt keep the parts/or can get the parts or go take photos..explain to toyota gb you were forced by inchcape to go to an independant garage because they told you you would have to pay for a part that clearly suffered from a common problem even though your car was under warranty and you couldnt afford their prices.....explain you have owned x amount of toyotas as has your family members and this has put you right off the brand......

also ill let you in on a secret(i am a tec for a main dealer)their is no contact with warranty....the box is removed the faulty part is traced then replaced the old part goes back to toyota and then a claim is submitted...by computer not by phone....

so phone and complain and in the manner i have explained...trust me it works

Omni,

I have to thank you again for your solid advice.

Re Aygo CLUTCH PROBLEM.

I have all the parts of the BROKEN CLUTCH ( NOT WORN ) in my hallway in a box. The mechanic saved them for my son, he told me he had replaced 5 Aygo clutches recently.

My wife was so incensed and upset by the treatment my son and I received, she wrote to Customer Relations at Inchcape Retail Ltd and to Toyota Customer Services with photo copy of the invoice to ask them to refund her; she sent them Recorded Delivery today. She will now send a copy letter to the address you provided tomorrow.

I hope they make a refund and restore our confidence in Toyota...!

Just at the start of what i think will be a long battle with Toyota UK - Aygo clutch failed at 30,000 15 months old car - advised by customer service at Toyota that car out of warranty, no good will gesture, state it is not a common/design fault although design has been altered (larger size) which I was advised of by garage (and on this site) who installed new clutch.Awaiting written response from Toyota before involving "Which Comsumers Association" on legal action via county court.

My future cars will not be Toyota of any model as backup so poor very sad to type this as owned four Toyotas over the years just stopped friend buying Toyota due to recent quality history across the model range.

I am old enough to remember another car company who neglected product quality & customers in the past "Austin Rover" I never though I would link the two companies in these key areas. The mark of a good company is what it does when it gets things wrong, if it faces up to the problem (replace faulty parts) it is able to put a total price on the corrective action, by resisting its customers complaints they will only find out the total cost when it is to late (lost sales and poor reputation)

I will let you know what "Which Magazine" advise.

Just google Aygo clutch problems and numerous entries come up.

Same for any make or model, just do your search and replace 'Aygo' with any other car and you will get a load of search results. If you google 'clutch problems' the main ones which come up are; Ford Focus, Ford Ka, Ford Fiesta, Honda Civic, Peugoet 107, Rover 75.

Another search just putting a few brands that first came into my head, gave me the following results; Renault clutch problems - results brought up - Scenic, Laguna and Trafic, Vauxhall clutch problems - many vauxhall models came up, Audi A4, Volkswagen Polo and Golf. I could go on but you get the idea.

Any brand/model you put into a search, with a certain problem such as clutch, will of course bring up many results.

2 of my cousins have Aygos and they've had no clutch problems.
