Told My Insurance About Insuction Kit.

I phoned my insurance company and told them I had put a Powertec SL1 induction kit into the CTS.

They said that they wouldnt insure me if the Mod put the BHP up at all.So that is me snookered unless I take it out or insure with someone else.

Does anyone one know how much BHP is gained by a Powertec SL1 kit or any induction kit,I have mailed Powertec but they havnt replied yet.

I have heard that 4 or 5 BHP if I am lucky.

Insurance companys insure cars with far more BHP than the humble CTS so why is it a problem for a few more BHP.

The insurance company is Prestige Car Insurance which are part of Abbey Insurance Brokers Northern Ireland.

i think most dont - doubt they'll admit it tho? its not really about increasing power - your giving an indication of how you drive which makes you appear high risk, all b0ll0ck5 really! dont tell um - if you smash it take it of when you get the car recovered home and if you cant take it off after a smash the insurance compant takes weeks before they come round and if you aint recovered in that time the money wont be much good to you anyway! same if its pinched - bizzies recover it and then ask you to collect.

True.

Greenlight Insurance

Whilst most of the mainstream Insurance providers target standard everyday risks and shy away from modified vehicle drivers, our ethos has always been different. We prefer modified or specialist vehicles to standard vehicles and solely seek to provide cover to cherished vehicle owners who’s car is their pride and joy. Our rates are very much geared to this area and we prefer to cover vehicle enthusiasts as opposed to company or commercially used cars or other high mileage workhorse vehicles.

By their very nature, people that have taken the time to carefully plan, then invest in the enhancement or improvement of their vehicle by modifying the original vehicle with the addition of sports options or aftermarket parts are vehicle enthusiasts. We are an Insurance provider that understands modified vehicle owners take pride in their vehicle and recognise that their vehicles are usually maintained to the highest standards.

The Modified vehicle enthusiast often invests considerable time and money into their vehicle, which in itself demonstrates they care about their vehicle. They are a true specialist market and fall squarely within the domain of the vehicle enthusiast, which is exactly where we seek and have continued to provide Insurance cover.

Our panel of Underwriters consists of leading Insurers within the market place, most of which are specialist vehicle Insurers who are also sympathetic to and have experience within this area of the market.

This allows the respective Underwriters to work with us in providing specific benefits and tailor their policies to incorporate features within their respective products that are both relevant and of specific use to the Modified car owner.

If you need Insurance cover for your Modified vehicle, Greenlight Insurance are an established specialist with a proven track record of providing quotations and cover to the modified vehicle enthusiast since our launch.

In addition to our providing specialist cover since 1996, by dealing with Greenlight you have the added financial security and piece of mind that we are authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and fully licensed in relation to providing advice in respect of the provision and management of general Insurance products.

Hey Woody,

If your over 25 mate try calling Equity insurance brokers.

Ive been with them for 4 years now and my insurance quotes were always spot on. They beat everyone else's quotes - even some of the online only "elephant" types. 4 of my mates are with them now too, they all moved over from Hughes, Elephant and a few other companies at their last renewal.

Well worth giving them a call.

They have branches everywhere, but the head office is up on the Ormeau Road in Belfast.

They wont be much use though if your under 25...

Just make sure you TELL THEM ABOUT THE FILTER first, they will probably only add a slight loading to your premium. Im with them and they know about my blitz filter and were ok with my mods.

The insurance companies general take on modifications is that, so long as they are declared, they are not quite so worried about mods that increase your cars "performance" eg lightening, light flywheels etc other than the cost to have those items replaced if the car is wrecked or stolen. They are a bit wary of mods which increase the cars "horsepower or torque" and they do draw a distinction between "Performance" and "Power"

Generally any proper insurance house should allow you to do just about anything to your car - so long as your willing to pay for it. They shouldnt really just say NO thats just them being ignorant. - I was with Hughes insurance for a while and they refused point blank to let me make any mods to my old Pug 206. So i left and told them that was why.

Its not just the bottom line price, tesco are probably cheaper, but from wht i know they wont cover broken windscreens, tyres, courtesy cars, keys etc. all the handy little things that other insurers offer. There is always bags of small print to read on every policy, theyre all different - bottom line price is sometimes a not the be all and end all. Depends what your looking for.

Hope you get it sorted mate.

Best of luck.

about the quoting bhp figures. they are specialist performance company. i dont think anything under 200hp will cause them too much worry. add on a few hp to 189 toyota quotes. rolling roads can give a vsriety of hp figures from place to place so estimate. pm tony@greenlight in rms. he is usually very quick to respond. i asked him a few questions through rmand he got back to me the next day. and i know tesco are crap. im with them but they cover nothing. everything is an extra.

bigfish will equity cover below 25, im only a young 23. but their office is close

When I had my Yaris I managed to get hold of a T Sport body kit.

My Insurance co at the time (I forget who!) would let me add the front bumper but not the side skirts and rear bumper.

Their reason? The side skirts and rear bumper would "change the look of the car"

And the sporty front bumper does what??

I am 38 years young with 6 years no claims...My wife phoned powertec to ask them about BHP gain if using one of there kits and they told her that the filter was more about noise than alot of powergain, but he did tell her there would be a BHP gain but could not say how much for a CTS.He told her that he had data for other cars but not the CTS.

My wife should have asked about the other cars he said he had data for just to get an idea... but she being a women didnt think to ask this.

I will get it sorted eventually....

look in this months jap performance - rc in warrington do a dyno run for them on Evo's. it actually lost power with the induction fitted! RC says that is normal as to get any gain from it you need a remap........... read it?

To be fair, I wouldn't really care if my CTS lost a bit of power with the Typhoon on, It just sounds awesome! and still beats the crud out of most challengers anyway.

With it being sat on 18's it's also got the added weight, so it's gonna be slower than it used to be but I really can't tell any differance.

Oh, I'm insured with Direct Line btw. Sometimes it's as little as a £50 increase a year or a few £££... £50 for the Typhoon.

Hi mate,

Yeah, Equity will certainly cover / quote you if your 23 its just one of their main underwriters* offer really significant discounts to over 25's. They will still do the whole "search the market" thing for you though and get you a decent price, but it may not work out any better than the next company if youve still got 2 years to go till that "golden age" of cheaper insurance. Cant hurt to ask though. Tell them that you phoned them on a recommendation of one of your friends who is with them and that youd be keep to go with them if the price is right.

*Im trying tnot to say too much here, cos i actually know the company head of ops in NI ;)

Ill get you the phone number if you like?

Ive got it sorted...my wife works for ABL Insurance which is part of Abbey insurance,so she made a few phone calls.

She phoned Prestige and spoke to someone she new ,they said that if she phones Powertec again and gets an answer from them about the BHP gain they might be willing to cover me.My wife phoned powertec again and spoke to someone who told her again that they didnt have the exact figures for the CTS but did have for other cars ...but on average the gain for all the cars they had data for was around 3-4% of a gain ,without any other MODS.

I then worked this out at 3% wich gives the CTS about 5.67 more BHP .

We phoned the insurance company and told them what Powertec had said, they asked me was there an airfeed on the bonnet which I replied no...and how much the induction kit cost ...they sain they would get back to me ...

It seems they are gona cover me but I will wait and see.....
