Losing Water.......

Got an MR2 a week ago and car has been losing water but i couldn't find out where from!

So today placed car on lift ramps and lifted up. First time i've had a proper look around underneath the car. Whilst looking at the fuel tank, I noticed a rusty/brown water streak down the side of it.

Anyway, purpose of putting car on ramps was to drop and replace the coolant. So, Undo bleed valve and air valves and drain the fluid. Refilled it no problem.

Started car and let it run observing for any inconspicuous leaks. And I found one! Right above the fuel tank at engine end its leaking out of a pipe, possibly hairline crack and there is only a pipe support clamp there and not a joint.

Is the smaller pipework above the tank got anything to do with the heater? When i placed the heater onto cold and slows the dripping right down, and now its not dripping at all...still on cold though on heater.

Looks like a right dogs dagnly bits to get to this pipe! But at least i now know where the water is leaking from!

Also, where can i buy rear subframe support bar? that was the only seriously corroded part on the underneath! rest is really tidy. But this support is about totally shot. its only approx 10inch in length and bolted at each end.

Cheers,

Dan

The pipes from hell!!!!!

common practise is to replace them front to back with rubber radiator hose, can be purchased from any hose/hydraulic specialist, this avoids tank removal and makes the job 10 times easier, (so they say).

Where do the thinner metal pipes go to above the tank then? cos i can only see them leaving mid-engine height and going over fuel tank. then thats it without removing the tank.

The main radiator pipes (larger bore) are fine.

To the heater mate, short fix is to join the two copper pipes together in the frunk

Here is the corroded part you are talking about, its a common problem but not an MOT requirement!!

Yeah thats the part. My RH has rotted. Take it for £16 it is worth replacing as it must be holding 'something' in situ??

Cheers for the link.

Very helpful forum guys, cheers

Because its only bolts from the body to the body I cant see it making any difference to the handling of the car at all.

My MOT guys says that some owners just remove them when they are rotton, its only thin tubular steel.
