Yaris Sr

Hi Fellow Toyota owners,

I am a newbie to the board, my partner and I have recently replaced our 05 Yaris with a brand new Yaris SR.

We both think that this is a superb car and Toyota have done an excellent job in improving an already superb car. The SR in particular appealed to us as it comes with a long list of options. One of these options however is turing out to be a nusance! The car we bought has the TomTom sat nav fitted as part of the entertainment system, this has failed requiring replacement twice in just 4 weeks of ownership and just 500 miles. On the face of it this does not sound too bad, however as the sat nav is an integral part of the entertainment system not only does the nav not work but also your unable to use the hand's free phone kit and change the radio station (easily).

On the whole this is spoiling what is otherwise a superb car!

The supplying dealer in has now told us that the car needs to go in for a full diagnostics check as they have had a number of failures reported and Toyota are working on a solution to the problem, just wondered if any other owners have had any similar problems with this option and if a solution has been offered to anyone else?

Thanks - Chris

Hello Chris and welcome to TOC.

I was interested in your posting as I am contemplating replacing my current Yaris with a 1.3 SR and have heard of some "minor" problems with the Sat Nav systems fitted on the SR. These have usually been associated with the memory cards as far as I can gather. I was told that Toyota are working on a modification but have no details of what is involved.

Please keep us posted how you get on

Hi Chris i've had problems with my tom tom at first they replaced the sd card twice now they have given me a complete new unit including sd card which i have been told by toyota to charge for 2 hrs before putting the sd card in.In my case it seemed to be when i connected to the hands free i had problems so hopefully this will cure my problem and give others some info.

Thanks for the reply's

So far I have already had the SD card replaced, and I have also been told that the Unit should be fully charged before use or insertion of the new card. The unit did work for a week but now we are back to square one.

As usual though the dealer has been superb and after reporting the problmem earlier this week, I have a loan car lined up for Monday whils they do further diagnostic checks.

Red Yaris 54, as for buying a 1.3SR, dont let the sat nav issues put you off what is (in my oppinion) as superb car, it is more refined easire drive then the prev. model. We are even getting an extra 3 - 5 miles per gallon when compared to the 55 plate 1.3 yaris we traded in, and at over £1.10 per ltr of unleaded at our local garage this soon adds up.

Ill keep you posted on my progress

As repoted earlier on this thread,

I was booked in to have the required diagnostics done today so that Toyota can work out why the system keep crashing. I arrived in time to be told that they now had further information (between booking the car in at 4.30 on friday and 8.00 monday morning) from Toyota stating that there is to be a re-call done on the cars so that the unit can be upgraded.

After adding an additinla 45 minuites to my journy time to the office to get to the dealier, as you can a Imagine I was lees than impressed! A call later that day to the sevice manager revelaed that they may be some weeks away from a slution which has left me and the other effected SR drivers with a limited entertainment system, no sat-nav, phone connection or mp3 player connection!

They have promised to gome good on the problems - I iwll keep you posted

Hi,

Join the club!

My sat nav went back after 4 days with problems with the sd card, which was replaced. Then, the stereo unit packed up so that was replaced with a new modified unit.

Now though every time I connect the sat nav into the unit I get an egg timer on the screen with a 'please wait' message. This happens every single time the sat nav is connected up and the car is started. Surely this isn't right? I will wait to see what happens regarding the recall then.

I know from speaking to the Dealer that there have been lots of problems with the sat nav and the stereo unit which as you say is a great shame because the stereo/sat nav unit is great when it works properly!

Hi

I have had a Yaris SR for a week and the Sat Nav has gone wrong already. The SD Card corrupts.

I have spoken to my dealer and as of this morning they have had a Toyota bulletin advising then that they are going to recall the SD Cards as they have found an issue with the software. He admitted they have had loads back and some customers on the 4th or 5th card.

However they have no time frame for the new cards being issued, and can not order the old cards any longer. I wanted to get one so I could take a copy of the fresh card and then fix it myself.

So I am stuck with nothing for now

I had a problem with my Tom Tom; it was supposed to be fully charged or the SD card gets corrupted. Apparently loads of people have had the same issue. Now got a new SD card and all is fine.

My dealer did think that it was a charging and curruption issue, however they managed to get one to go wrong straight away in the dealership. that had been on charge all day. Apparently (only going by what the dealer said). they have found a problem with the software build.

I have for the time being fixed it myself, having had alot of experience with Tom Tom software and have managed to have it working 100% even doing all the things that normally made it crash, but will revert to the Toyota full build once they have resolved the issues.

No, I've given up on the toyota software for now. Im using the basic tom tom toyota application from the TOMTOM home CD that came with the unit, but all the maps are from my TOMTOM Navigator 5 software.

Since they replaced your SD card has the unit been reliable?

It seemed to be although accessing the mp3 files seemed a bit slow, but now ive just turned it on and the sd card has corrupted again.Just my luck. :(

Same problem same response. I'm on my second sd card.

One work around to keep bluetooth is to connect to a PC and format the Tomtom. Then re-start TomTom Home and it will re-load the software but not maps. If you have a copy of your maps directory you can copy that back on.

Otherwise really pleased with my Diesel version.

I had the same problem with SD card (satnav not able to read the card as it got corrupted).. got it reinstalled from the dealer.. Now, I copied the whole card into another backup SD card (1GB capacity) and carrying with me (just in case, if one card fails, this can be used as backup..!!) - also, I think we should put/remove the unit when we switch off the unit completely (ie. after taking out/before inserting the ignition key from/to car) - if we take out the satnav while its powered 'on', it may cause to corrupt the SD card..

hope it doesn't corrupt again...

Hello!

As I'm a proud owner of a Yaris Sol with the TNS 400 unit since friday so this is my first post.

I'm from Belgium so please ignore any spelling mistakes or weird vocabulary. :D

I have an issue with playlists. I've put some MP3's on a Memory Stick, along with some playlists I created with Windows Media Player. The playlists are in m3u-format.

When I connect the Memory Stick it is impossible to select a playlist on the Stick as no files are visible. Apparently the TNS 400 unit doesn't recognize playlists in m3u-format (although I thought this was the most common file format for playlists).

After reading some interesting posts on an couple of internet fora, I learned that a possible solution consisted in changing manually the file extension from .m3u to .pla (a non existing file format).

When I plugged in the Stick, I noticed the playlist files were visible via the Select-menu. However, when I selected one of the playlists by tapping the touchscreen, nothing happened. It seems like the unit does recognize the .pla-files but the do not "contain" the required MP3's.

Has anybody experienced the same issues? Any advice?

Btw, when I picked up my car the dealer notified me concerning the current issues with TomTom. The day before, Toyota Motor Marketing Europe (TMME aka my former employer  ) and the contractor who produces the unit inspected the satnav-unit in my car and in another car. Apparently the new, hopefully correct working, memory cards would be issued in August (at least in Belgium). I hope it will possible to updates the card material too from the TomTom-website from that moment on.

Greetings,

Yesterday I bought a new Urban 4runner with the TNS400 sat nav system. First thing I did when I got home was start playing with my tomtom. Luckily I did a backup of the fresh install, because I knew I was going to be hacking a bit. Coincidentally, my SD card corrupted before I could even do anything fun. I don't believe it is the SD card that is corrupting, it's the file system when the USB is plugged in. Regardless, here's how you can rebuild you SDcard of it goes bad on you:

1) Make sure you have a backup in TomTom HOME

2) Plug-in the unit and allow computer access

3) Goto "My computer" and find the tomtom drive it's "E:" on my machine...yours may be different.

4) Right click the tomtom drive and select "format"

5) Format with FAT32 file system

6) Open Tomtom HOME and try to upgrade you tomtom...it will should try to download the latest TOYOTA software *IMPORTANT*

7) Install the TOTOYA software

8) Restore Backup from Tomtom HOME

9) Use the Tomtom HOME "disconnect" to safely unmount the device

10) Enjoy your Tomtom....again. :)

Hope this help some of you with problems.

Once you feel comfortable restoring your Tomtom...go try out some new applications. :)

I personally found the "clear route" option insanely hard to find and buried in the menus....so I moved it to my main page with my iPod controls with this handy menu editor.

Do not trust Tomtom home to make your back up the best way to back up is in windows explorer as Tomtom home is unreliable and may miss parts of the back up .

As the previous poster has said use the correct disconnect procedure and give it plenty of time to finish what it is doing as home will tell you that you can disconnect but it is still running

I thought I was the only one having problems with the Tom Tom sat nav in the Yaris SR. My SR was only 2 weeks old and I went onto the tomtom home site to update the camera alerts I had just paid for. My unit froze and wouldnt work again ! I rang tom tom service for help and they were a waste of time. I took my unit back to the Toyota dealer in Wigan and they were excellent. They advised the card was corrupt and would order me a new one but there was a back order delay. I did however get a call from them about a week later to advise one had turned up. I no longer go on the tom tom website to update it as I have no confidence in it. The unit has been ok since I avoided trying to update it !! I ended up buying a Novus/Talex speed camera unit with free camera updates for life. Brand new for just over £60 on eBay and it works brilliantly so will never use tom tom camera alerts ever again.

My Yaris SR is now 2 months old and I have nothing but praise for it. Handles superbly. Once of the best cars I have owned. My last car was a Mini that I bought from new just under 2 years ago and traded it in for the SR. In my opinion the Yaris SR is far better to drive than the Mini and much better value for money !!

Dear All,

to my understanding the Quality control of Toyota must have failed for the TNS400 system.

How can it be that a car maker that has such highly developed quality and production systems does not detect the failures that are reported for the TNS 400 before launch of the product.

Might it be that Toyota is not used to deal with devices that are Software supported or did they just selected the wrong OEM to bundle the TomTom with a Radio device??

I had during the 4 Months I have my Toyota Yaris the following issues with the TNS400

1_ Nav system freezing down if I switch of the car too quickly

2_ Nav system not starting or showing the please wait screen (SD card replaced in May2008 and since than the system works better)

3_ CD stops playing after 4 or 5 tracks and I only get the CD out if I pres the reset bottom

4_ No actual Map SW available for the device and no support from TomTom

In order to get details on point 4 I have contacted Toyota Europe to get explanations. I will post the answer if and as soon I receive it….

Hi

Had my 1.4 d4d SR for a week now. Thought everything was going well until yesterday morning. Tom Tom SD card corrupted. Couldn't do anything with it. Went to local dealer this morning. He took my name and address and told me that there was an upgrade at the end of August. Apparently they are going to issue a 2 gb SD card because they have found that the original is not 'man enough'.

Short information.

The OEM for the TomTom Toyota gives (04.08.2008) the following information:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Model Eclipse AVN2227P will also in the future benefit from Updates and new Functions.

However Navcore 7 and Map Share are currently not yet available.

We will inform you as soon as SW Updates will be available.

So it would suprises me if the new SD Card announced for Belgium for August would contain the Navcore 7 update as well.....

No Feedback from Toyota and TomTom so far......

Hi there in Belgium

I've had my SR for two weeks now and the card lasted one week. The dealer has told me that there will be a new SD card due the end of August. Is this what you understand as well.
