Just Gone To Inspect A Gt4

Hi Guys!

I have just gotten back from viewing an ST185 and have a few technical questions that I hope some of you people who know a little more might be able to help me with.

After acting like a small child playing and pushing every button I could find, this is what I found:

The Car is an import.... What does this actually mean in terms of parts etc, are the Jap and UK models essentially the same?

Car was in good condition and body work clean and tidy very little rust, no noticable leaks from an pipe work.

The Car has been lowered, had stiffer suspension put on. - What effect does this have on the car, will it cause damage to it at all, as more shock will be going through the body?

It has had 18" alloys put on it. Other than looks how will this affect the cars performance, will the speedo be affected, acceleration, handling etc

There isn't much in the way of paper work for the car, which worries me a little, even though If I did go for this one I would probably get the thing serviced.

Faults

The Turbo dial on the dash is none functional.

I checked and the turbo was definately spooling up and it certainly worked when it driven, Would this dial be easy to fix so that it works again. The Whole panel has been replaced with an aftermarket one. I didnt detect and air leaks from and of the pipe work, but how would you know it the turbo was delivering at its full potential?

Other Questions

This particular car didnt have cruise control, is this an easy thing to get working/installed on the car or is it a complex/expensive job?

I went over the car to the best of my ability, however I am no mechanic would there be something I might have over looked?

Thats all I can think of at the moment, If you need and more info i'll try and provide what I can!

The price is £2000 Personally I think it a little on the high side, I have seen GT4s from £900-£3000 is £2k about what I should be looking at or less?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Imports are no different really to the UK cars, except in spec usually. The parts used are the same regardless of country of first sale. The main difference with Japanese Imports is that they don't usually have a foglight as standard - that's about it !

and the insurance can be a little higher, best going to an import specialist insurer.

suspension will not harm the chassis and bar making the ride firmer will be fine, one point worth noting is that the lower ride hight can cause corrosion on the underside, worth checking as ive seen 4's that look mint on top but are very crusty underneath.

wheels again wont cause any probs other than again a firmer ride and the cost of replacing the tyres.

as for the turbo gauge they are next to useless anyway, your better fitting and aftermarket one, boost should be no more than 0.7-0.9bar.

dont be afraid of paying a little more for a good example as a cheap car with a few niggles can cost more in the long run than a minter
