Strange Noise From Front Right Wheel

Hi all,

Hope you can help me.

I am experiencing an intermittent noise for the past few days.

As I can identify most noises quite well, I know it ISN'T

a) wheel bearing (humm)

B) worn pads (metal scrape)

c) CV joints (cluck - cluck)

the noise comes and goes on uphills or down hills, braking, cruising or accelerating.

normally there for about 5-10 seconds then gone for 20 seconds then back for 5-10 seconds etc.

If I had to describe the noise, it sounds like dry rice being shaken in a glass bottle or when a train is breaking (that metal on metal braking noise)

the noise it self is quite loud and can be heard even with the radio on.

the car doesn't have abs, but the noise tends to resonate in an abs type way if that makes any sense.

it is definately coming from the wheel area.

I have jacked up the car and spun the wheel, but there is no noise then.

does anybody have an idea what the noise could be?

1995 corolla hatchback

approx 130,000 miles.

appraciating any suggestions.

Ian

You know you just need to check your wheel nuts... last time i had my wheels off i had hand screwed my bolts on, lowered the car to the floor and only then tightened 3 wheels...

Just go and give it a quick check, even if you havn't had your wheel off cos this will also make this same effect.
