Just fitted a Replacement K&N element into my otherwise mechanically standard Aygo.

Dosent make the car sound any different and i couldnt feel any real difference until i got to a motorway hill. It doesnt slow down anymore on big ones so must be making a little bit more power/torque.

Recommended if you do a reasonable amount of motorway work.

Interesting I have the filter sitting right next to me waiting for fitment.

Air filter does not add any power at all, the engine just gets more air (and that's good). So, no hp increase, but the engine runs a bit smoother :)

Dissagree, The ECU will utilise what ever oxygen is available to maximise burn efficiency, so in simple terms, More air = bigger bang. In addition, the colder and denser the air the better hence a CIA will give you a considerable and tangible power increase (4BHP on my old car with Rolling road read outs to prove) over and above a standard element replacement, however im growing up a bit now so decided not to go that route with my littel economy car.

Panel filter or cold ai intake? And what was the size of your previous engine?

You will NOT get ~8% power increase with a panel filter on this engine.

Has anyone done anything to make the engine sound more fruity and what were the results?

The main thing that gives the Aygo such character is the wonderful 3 pot noise (compared to the Yaris 4 pot) which goes from throaty at idle to a nice rasp over 6000rpm. I've removed the sound proofing but to be honest it is so small it has not made much difference.

I'm more interested in getting a TRD Filter (for fitment Yaris 1.0i) and if not that probably a Blitz panel filter going on eBay...

if you want an air filter to add even 1bhp you need to change the unit not just add a pannel filter... it doesn't work like that.

Maybe spend £200 on a propper cold ait intake induction kit and get maybe 10bhp on a 1.6 but thats about it tops.

Old car was a 150BHP Hyundai Coupe F2 evo with a full Cold air intake that i also had a ram air custom built to push more cold air to the cone, but the 4BHP was at a standstill on the rolling road.

Just a panel element replacement in the Aygo, like i said dosent feel any different expect on long motorway drags uphill where it nolonger losses speed in top gear.

These rolling road tests are often comparing the old used filter with the new K&N. Not a new standard filter with a new K&N.

...am I right or wrong eh?

I do however believe there should be slight horse power not torque increase. I am not a mechanic but I think there is sufficient air at low revs so any power gain is at the high revs BHP end. Cold air makes a huge difference to petrol cars again noticeable at the high end revs and not the low down torque. The only way to increase torque is the engine needs to get bigger or use Diesel engine that has a higher combustion pressure or something like that.

A mild turbo in Aygo S would be ideal if Toyota had any guts to make the ultimate super mini to kill the Smart Brabus dead.

Personally Johan we don't need to kill the Smart Brabus dead - the Smart's done half the work - the gearbox is still the stupidly pointless automatic SoftTouch thingy that is completely horrid, the ridiculous looks that make the Smart look more at home on a casino table with dots painted on each side and i could probably guarantee you in the real world of b-roads, bumps, crests and mounds - despite our power disadvantage - our car's would be faster and a damn sight more enjoyable and respectable...

All the Aygo needs is the basic performance essentials - uprated intake, cracking exhaust system, uprated plugs and maybe an ECU re-map of some variety... Then add in the crucial stuff - suspension, brakes and tyres (tyres especially that get overlooked) - and you'll have a cracking car that will put a massive smile on your face everytime you jump in it to the shops or taking the scenic route to work...

In my personal opinion of course - and back on topic, panel filters won't make much of an imrpovement on our cars (small displacement engines) you'd only really get some, if any, noticeable improvement on bigger engined cars like V6's or V8's etc.
