Mr2 Turbo Rev 2 Twitch!

Hi All. Recently I changed from my Rev 2 T bar GTi-16 to a Rev 2 turbo as I was itching for more power. I am really pleased with the car and the difference in power is amazing. I paid £2800 for a black rev 2 turbo on a K plate with 54k on the clock and it's pretty mint. Unfortunatley the moron that owned it before hadn't got a clue about wiring the stereo and also smoked so I have been frantically cleaning it and installing a new head unit and Speakers. It came with a 6 month warranty and I drove it 200 miles the first night from Milton Keynes to my home in Dorset without any problems.

Now I have got used to it there is something that is difficult to describe but I'm sure isn't right. The only way I can describe it is that when the power is on (and not pushing it) the steering seems wooly and like the front is lighter. When I let the power off it suddenly pulls tighter and more responsive. I have a friend who is an MOT tester and he will put it up on the ramps to have a good look but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced it. I'm not too worried as is should be covered whatever it is and it's just gone through the MOT so I guess it shouldn't be anything major. It just doesn't feel quite right and I'm not 100% with it till it does.

My own opinion is that it is a bush or something alike that may have gone but won't know till I can get under it. I know it should handle better than it does and the fact it has more power wouldn't have this effect surely?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers, Matt

not really sure but have you checked the tyres (all of them) have the correct pressure...???

Posted

tyre pressures

tyre sizes

tyre type (ditchfinders are not good )

wheel bearings

bushes

balljoints

subframe bolts

track rod ends

maybe even an issue with the power steering system switching itself on and off while driving

will all effect handling and give a nervous feel

the best thing to do is jack he car up on the chassis, so you can play/poke/prod/tug with each wheel and hub to see if there is any movement and abnormal wear

cheers

I've heard that since these are RWD vehicles, the nose will pickup when you accelerate. if the problem has arisen since the power increase, and also subsides when you're not accelerating, I would imagine that this "wooly steering" might be the result of the front end picking up slightly during acceleration.

It's going to go up on a ramp tomorrow night as my mate is going to take a look at it. I will post any nasties on here and let you know how it goes. Finally I have managed to get a photo uploaded of it too. What do you all think?

So the results are....... Duff front shocks. They were tested and are really soft. Not an MOT failure apparently but getting that way and certainly worth replacing.

Yeah, they should be rock solid!!

I cant even rock my car from side to side, just tyre flex!
