Tyre Wearing

ive noticed and replaced my front right tyre as the inside of the tyre was really worn down. after seeing this i got my cousin to have a look at it on the ramp and the other three tyres were showing early signs of the insides wearing down. I took it to protyre to get the tracking done and he showed me the numbers proving that my car was fine. Ive not bin driving it hard as im still bedding the engine in and a lad at work told me that 17 inch tyres have a tendancy to wear on the inside which sounds really strange. Tyre size 205 45 17. Just wondered if this is common

No I've not had that on my 205 17's and I've had my car 3 years.

Are all the wheels balanced correctly? Plus how's the shocks? Worn shocks cause tyre ware.

Thanks for the quick reply, il drop it back in to my cousins and get him to have a look. Silly me accidentally bought a new Pirelli pzero without knowing, i just put the spare tyre on the front to replace the crappy tyre and bought another tyre so i had the same tread was on the axle. suppose 124 quid did sound a bit expensive lol. How easy is it to determine if the shocks are naff, is it a glance and a yes or no or another woeful bill? .....not that im pessimistic or anything

Did you get the camber angles checked ?

If the camber angle is out it will give the signs you have stated.

Apparently the gen 7 has adjustable camber angles, most basic garages won't have the equipment to check this so you will need to find a specalist or take it to Mr T.

For the shocks - Push doen a couple of times on each corner and let go. After letting go it should go - Up, Down, Up and then stop on a very small down. If any side bounces more than that, then you need new shocks and they are replaced in pairs (front & back).

yeah i got the camber angles got checked i just didnt get the wheels balanced. if it was adjustable camber would it not show up on the computer that it was out of sync? Better to be safe i suppose so il just get the balancing and that done at the mr t workshop.

It would depend what kind of tracking/alignment gear the garage has, some can only check the toe angles and that the fronts are in a direct line with the rears, this is referred to as tracking, wheel alignment or (in some cases) 4 wheel alignment, There is other tracking equipment that can check the FULL GEOMETRICS of the car, inculding castor and camber.. 15 angles in total, you need to ask if you can get a Full Global Geometric Check done.

It could also be worth pointing out that if you car has been lowered then the standard tracking settings may no longer be applicable to your car, the standard settings are for standard suspension setups, with a full global check the standard settings aren't needed as the equipment will set the car up to how it should be, you would also get a printout of what the new settings are (if they have changed from standard you can use the info for future normal tracking)

Depending on the tyres your using too... Some tyres like michelin have a stronder wall on the outside of the tyre than the inside due to pressure points etc, so you need to make sure your tyres are always at the right pressure, assuming you do this, are you sure that you know the EXACT pressure, i know a lot of people who say 'I think it is....' thinking isn't enough, just take 30 secs to look once more in your handbook and check if you can, might just be that you think your tyres are right but they may be 2bar down!

Just an Idea as it is so common for some people not to know, but I don't want to make it sound like I am assuming your a dumb *****, as your more than likely not.

lol its ok i feel like one. I should be more mechanical minded as if my car isnt exactly right then im sure its about to cost me thousands of pounds and if i hear about things that go wrong with a celica i decide mine has it..ha im a car hypochondriac. Ive had the tracking checked and i also checked the shocks. I could try the wheel balancing i suppose but i noticed you said about cheap tyres. I did have some pretty crappy ones on before . Hero i think they were called which is like buying a hyundai tv lol.

Ive checked the pressures and they are fine so i guess il just have to wait and see if my new tyres wear the same way.

My cheap tyres wore badly, changing them after work tonight decided cheap aint the option so go 4X Michelin Energy E3A tyres at trade price, £138.18 for all 4 :) just gotta pay £30 now for fitting.

But all tyres are different to. some have softer walls than others and sometimes if these are ever so slightly defective then they will wear oddly. I wouldn't worry about it, but if you are then just find a friend of a friend who can just check your tracking, ballancing etc with the new tyre on
