Fuel Consumption

Afternoon all

New on the boards so go easy on me :)

I'm interested in purchasing a Toyota corolla very soon. After reading reviews online everything seems to be in order, however i have read the same story from owners reviews about the poor fuel consumption. This is normally from the 1.4 and 1.6 models. I have used the search function on the forum but nothing seems to come up. I am interested on purchasing either the 1.4 or 1.6 however these so called reviews have put a sour taste on a possible purchase, especially regarding Toyota acclaimed 42 and 40 MPG. Can any owners spread light on the topic. All help will be most appreciated. By the way, this is for the 02 and onwards models.

Thankyou :D

Welcome to TOC

I have a 2.0 D-4D, which I think you should try and include in your choices.

I am currently driving around town with a small part of motorway driving, averaging 58 mpg.

I drove to Leicester a week ago and averaged 66 mpg for the trip.

Granted I am driving with economy in mind but still fairly normal.

Thanks for the input chap. Unfortunately the diesel is a bit out of my price range at the moment, however as you said you haven't really had a big problem with the diesel consumption i doubt the petrol wont have a problem (ie wight o cause causing a increase in consumption). Anymore feedback guys?

I'm about averaging 350miles from a full tank, haven't got a clue what that makes my MPG, but that mainly from general driving around town, school runs and the odd stretch further out of town.

Last time when i did check my MPG, it was showing something silly like 88mpg while i was doing 90mph!!

btw, my car is the 1.6 on a 52 plate, should be helpful for you

my 1.6 on a 56plate 39.8mpg all road conditions

Mine is a 06 1.6. The average is about 35/36 mpg when I am really easy with th pedal and going about 60mph on the motorway. If I just use it as it should be, it should be about 34mpg. And hardly any aircon.

I am really surprised you can get nearly 40 mpg.

I had the 2001(old shape) 1.4 for 4 years and done 60K on it. The average is about 40mpg.

The rule of thumb for fuel consumption is always allow about 10% to 15% difference in realy life as against the manufacturer's figures.

Cheers

Freddie

I do a general mix of urban and country driving and am relatively soft on the pedal i.e. I am not a boy racer. I get around 36mpg average at best with standard unleaded. However, the consumption improves to as much as 42mpg with Shell V-Power but that is, of course, much more expensive than regular unleaded.

I have an automatic 1.6 E12 (55 plate) by the way so manual ought to give you a slightly better figure.

What size is your tank? I have written a Java program that calculates MPG :)

P.S. ANYONE ELSE WANT ME TO WORK THEIRS OUT JUST POST!

Need to know,

1. Tank size Litres.

2. Miles covered in tank.

I think my tank is about 55ltrs, or there abouts.

All i know it can take alot of fuel

so 55 Litre tank, 350 miles = 28.95 MPG (thats not good) so you did 6.36 miles per litre

Say you only used 50 of your 55 litres though then you'd have done 31.9 MPG... next time you fill up make a note of home many litres you put in and I will do it for that much :) cos this way it actually seems bad, when really you might have left a lot of litres in your tank lol

Collin

p.s. say you fill up and you get about 46 litres in like me and i ahve a 55 litre tank and fill up shortly after my light comes on cos i do a lot of miles to work so can't leave it a day lol then you'd be on 35MPG or so which is better

Yeah that does sound a bit pants for my mpg, but then most of my driving is about town and stuff, so alot of stop start, but then i am a bit heavy on me right foot

Personally, i'm not that fussed, as on average it last me about 11days worth of driving which is always about right since i got it from new.

I know I'm not covered in the engine range here, but in my T-Sport I get 28.5Mpg. (according to the computer) We do about 50-70 miles per day depending, put £25 of petrol in every 3 or 4 days. Alot of that is Stop, start driving and I am addicted to lift too. I use V-Power so when I top up with £25 it's usually about 20-21 litrees. If I really take it eacy on motorways I can get about 32Mpg..

Hi,

I have a 54 corolla 1.6 and usually get about 33 mpg from mine, its not all stop start though!!!

I did a trip the other week (v. hot day) and got 45mpg!!! (could be a problem there methinks)

but it has gone back to 30-33 mpg again.

Thought it might have been the tyres being properly inflated

but still is the same.
