96 Corolla Creaking When Breaking?

First time on the forum so Hello to everyone!

I have had my 96 Corolla 1.6 CD for nearly 1 year now I bought from an elderly gent who was a second owner and the car has done 36k with full (mostly Toyota) history.

Just recently when coming to a gentle stop and applying light brake pressure there is a creak, creak, creak coming from the front end? it doesnt make the noise if I brake hard!

I have got it on axle stands at the mo and checked out the joint gators around the drive shafts and they r ok. the nearside gaitor nearest the hub has got Dirty grease around the ends of it which may point to something? The others are all clean and crack free. When I spin the wheels the noise appears to be in the gearbox or the bit that splits the drive? (sorry that sounds Thick of me but dunno what its called?) I wandered if the gearbox is dry or just plain knackerd? but I cant find where to check it? Also if i rotate the wheels one direction then the other there seems to be a little play and a kind of rattleing noise like twanging a ruler over the edge of a desk?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Workshop manual on order!

Thought i'd help ya out... thats your Differential by the sounds of it.

Have you checked that your discs and pads aint worn down a lot, as on the older cars like yours and mine, the brake calipers only have 1 hydraulic on them so the front pads don't wear on the discs as much as the rear do, so it could be that, as when you brake hard, you might be clamping them on so hard it can't make the noise, just an idea to check the insides of ya discs for any unusual grooves.

Can buy new discs and pads for £70 from www.cesuk.com/ Give them a phone call for them if you need these, best price i can find.

Thanks for the reply. I have just taken the caliper off and pads out and discovered a nice big groove on the inside pad, plus the backing plate is bent out of shape for some reason? shody fitting most likely? the back of the disc has a rust build up or something? wasnt strong enough to get those two 17mm bolts undone  to look at the disc properly, will need a long bar!

anyway I was having a quick look on fleebay for a brake bar for a motorbike and stumbled into a seller selling brake discs and pads for the rolly at £55 the set including postage!

Well the ones I mentioned above, i didn't state were vented discs to, but entirelly your choice, (note: vented NOT grooved)

You could have got a stone stuck in there to cause the groove or anything. unless the pad matches the groove exactly and then it will be down to what I stated above happened on mine.
