Hi everybody, I've just discovered this site and I am hoping someone out there may be able to give me some advice. I have recently put my previa back on the road after having it stored for some years. When it was last used it was running perfect and the fuel consumption round town was in the low to mid twenties. Since I have had it back on the road it the fuel consumption is awful. I have checked for fuel leaks and black smoke coming out the exhaust which there is none, but what I have noticed is that the tick over doesn't return to eight hundred (rpm) but stays around twelve or thirteen (rpm) other than that she runs well. Can anybody give me some idea of what may be causing the problem.

Many thanks Laurie. S

Hi there, you don't say what year you're car is , but for comparison, mine is a k reg 2.4GL and with short stop start journey's (school run/shops/)etc. I get about 18 mpg. from it, but i'm used to that having run Espaces at 2l and getting 16/17mpg from them. It's a trade off, what you gain in seats you lose in economy and the price of petrol these days doesn't help. The other technical stuff i can't help with, but the rev's should lower as engine warms, it is worth investigating.

Take Care

After standing for so long two things are most likely to have happened.

1. Your brake caliper sliders will almost definitely have corroded. This is one of the biggest causes of high consumption on these cars as the brakes are continuously binding.

2. Your throttle body and associated ISCV (Idle speed control valve) has gummed up. This is what controls your idle and running and from your description this is a possible cause.

Neither are difficult jobs but both are very time consuming.

I get 20-22 around town and 25-28mpg on the open road normal driving and up to 28 around town if coasting (that is using hills and inertia to move the car rather than using fuel. Note coasting is not as effective on the motorways at speed due to wind resistance)
