My beloved Corolla Executive failed its NCT = MOT today for the 1st time ever since I got her :crybaby::crybaby::crybaby:

Emissions, Brakes, Lights & Suspension were all spot on, BUT, down @ the bottom of the sheet was Bodywork. Looks perfect for 17 years old but "Primary Structural Corrosion" @ rear . Door Sills & Pillars, Nearside rear & Door sills, offside rear.

Orders were to get it welded, not filled. (Thought I had a death sentence @1st) Am to bring her back, unpainted, before the 23rd of next month for a visual re-check. No charge. Think the Examiner was a bit embarrassed when telling me, as he had been saying what good nick she was in when I was handing her over.

I went straight to the Body Shop. I know the owner, but he wasn't there. The lad who had a look didn't see anything @ 1st glance & couldn't give me a price, so back again in the morning.

I don't mind what it costs (well I do, naturally) coz I'd rather spend up to Euro1k on a fairly rare model Rolla, in certified top mechanical order, than lash out multiples of that amount on an unknown.

When I bring her back for the paint job, after the examination, I will get the spots of rust which are appearing on the Sun Roof seen to. In for a Penny (?) in for a pound

It is always dissapointing when your pride and joy suffers that fate.

I wish you well in getting it repaired and back in its prime condition

Whinge over

I brought her to a friend in the " Body" trade. He said "NO". When I asked him why, he said it was because it wouldn't pay him. He would have to charge Euro 120 for each side.

Told him I'd pay it, coz I didn't want to scrap a car whose other test results were as good as a new car. I didn't tell him, either that I would have paid Euro1k

Got a ring from him this morning to say she was ready & that he would come down & collect me as it was peeing down. Straight down to NCT for a visual & have my Cert for another 2 years

Am to drop her back to him tomorrow to get the new metal painted. :D

Its worse when the MOT tester advises you to sell it as it will need alot of work next time round... thats the only reason I sold my Mini!

Body shop said it would do me till next NCT :ffs: Then scrap her ?

Surely it is possible to buy or have a new pair of sills made up. I know they only made my particular model from 88 - 92.

Any being scrapped would have the same problem. It is just that I am very atached to this particular type. Have had 2. previous was 89. & had to go coz of rust in the chassis. :(

I thinks it's great that your willing to try and keep it going a bit longer.

At the end of the day when people in the 'trade' say "scrap it" don't they realise that if everybody scraped their old car there would be no classic cars in existance at all (thus no classic car shows, museums and so on etc.).

Have you tried Toyota for new Sills? They still supply 99% of bits for my car and thats an 88 that was never even sold here! In not, anything can be fixed... just watch american hot rod!

Thanks Mate. I will start working on it. My particular model was never on sale here in Ireland. We had the Sprinter, which is similar, but not as high Spec.

Will try Toyota, so, & am about to sign up with Toyota Enthusiasts Club. See my post, recently , titled "Another Toyota Club"
