Good thinking insuring under parent's names. No-one's ever thought of that before and it's definately not illegal and will leave you un-insured.

(that's sarcasm by the way - google insurance fronting)

Thats wicked, i think the thing with insurance companies is, they class the bmw's as executive kinda cabriolets and coupes. However the t sport is classed as a hot hatch and as being young that much bhp....for such a small car they know why you want one in the first place.

If you dont mind me asking which insurance company did you take the policy with under your dad, i may try and get a quote 2.

its not illegal unless you only ever drive the car and your parents never go near it. its perfectly valid, i discussed it with my insurance company when i got insured under my moms name and they said it was fine and adjusted the policy to suit.

just make sure you tell them that you are sharing the car, as you have no need to buy your own car.

the only thing is my excess will be greater than my moms in a crash

lovely car mate, i likes it!

You're kind of right, and kind of wrong.

The insurance company needs to know who the main user of the car is. If you insure in your parent's name and have yourself as a named driver without telling them that you're actually the main user (it's possible to be a named driver and be the main user with some companies, but normally the policy holder is the main user) it is illegal.

If try to make a claim they can refuse to pay out, then if you have the money to fight them in court you could try, but if said parent also has another car, and you use the car for commuting to work/college (they'll find out easily enough) then you're up the creek.

Oh, and No Claims Discount can only be used on one policy at a time, so if your parent has their own car with their own policy you might want to check they're not using it twice.

It sounds like a lecture, but I'm young too, and I don't like the idea of uninsured youngsters crashing cars and putting my legitimate premiums up as a result.

I believe Jock Fran is right. The named driver if usually for occasional use (some policies may differ). However, can the insurance company prove that you are only using the car on an occasional basis, probably not. Even if you did 20,000miles a year I doubt they could prove that it wasnt your parents who completed 19,500 of them, so as far as I can see its not really a problem. You just have to be careful.

I guess its the same as declaring your annual mileage, if I quote 6000 miles per year, but my car has done 15,000 miles since the last MOT, who is to say that my mate, who is fully comp and insured under his own policy to drive other cars, has borrowed my car and done 10,000 miles in it ( the Ba$t*&d). Difficult for them to prove again.

The point is though, they don't have to prove anything.

If they want to refuse to pay out they will. Then you'll have to take them to court to sue for the money they've refused to pay out. If you're genuine and can win then fair enough, but if you are lying then unless you're super rich then they'll have the better lawyers, and can quite easily prove things through petrol payments, CCTV etc.

It's not worth it.

Errmm a named drive isnt illegal unless your parent dont use it you only use it, but they gotta monitor you 24/7 & tracking device to prove it but that wouldnt happen, beside a named driver is better than no insurance

Excellent! As you're a mechanic who now owns a T-Sport can you work out what's wrong with the gear box and let us know how to sort it out. Tired or putting my shoulder out to change gears
