Tyre Recommendations?

I shall shortly need to replace the front tyres on my E12 Corolla which have done around 22k miles from new. I currently have Michelin Energy front and back. I'm looking for a quiet tyre (I like a peaceful life in the cabin). It doesn't need to be a performance tyre - though obviously safety and road holding are very important - since I'm not a racer. Cost, within reason, isn't an issue. Which? recently recommended the Dunlop SP Sport Fastresponse as a quiet tyre and great for wet grip.

I'd welcome recommendations. The problem with tyres, of course, is that you can't exactly road test them so have to try your best to get it right first time!

hi, the best thing for you to do really as you know how much you have to spend etc, is to go on HERE and see what is avaliable and then read some of the reviews and ratings from tests.

Ta for that. Very helpful. Trouble with tyres is that you are really spoilt for choice - there are so many makes/types to choose from :(

Best to choose what is originally on there from toyota as they created the car and used tyres which it would most suit for the best ability of road holding and comfort, i think my corolla e12 came from dealer with all dunlop sport tyres.

Just got a full set of Goodyear Excellence fitted a couple of weeks back, 205s, first time down the M6 Toll it chucked it down and they cut through the water like a hot knife through butter.

£4 quid change out of £300 for 4 corners stung a bit, but what price the life of oneself and loved ones.

If cost isn't an issue then Goodyear Excellence are hard to beat.

I found that dunlops are a bit soft and didnt give the super grip that you would expect, wear quickly, same story with Pirelli.

Pay to buy good tyres, i got Vredestein sportac 3 on the front of my car now. Class act in the wet, good in the dry.

Good budget brand are Hankook, I have them on a mondeo since i bought the car 4 years ago.

i found that if you want quiet,durability and decent grip, oh and it to be affordable to boot i reccoment Avon Enviro's. also known as CR322

have another look on that website I gave you, they should be a good place to buy them from but remember you then need to find a local fitting station to you, mine cost me £30 all 4 but you will only get that deal like me if you know the owner of the garage, as this covers the cost of, new valves, pay the bloke something at least for doing the job and disposal of the old tyre.

In the end I decided to use etyres because I wanted to get them fitted at home. Price all in for the 2 tyres was around £120. Have had telephone/email contact with them and they seem ok. Will try to remember to report here what they are like with the fitting (tomorrow) in case anyone is interested in online ordering/fitting and hasn't tried it.

Can i add Toyo T1Rs into the mix

Had toyo proxys on my last few cars, great grip esp in the Wet, good tread pattern and not too pricey either.

Thanks for all the contributions to the thread guys. I had elected to go with the Goodyear Excellence but, in the event, etyres found itself out of stock so, after some thought, I have gone with a pair of Dunlop SP Sport FastResponse tyres. I know Dunlops don't appear very popular these days and I've not used them before myself but this is a new tyre which gets generally good reviews so am giving a pair a home on my Corolla. Have only driven a few dry miles in them thus far but no problems as yet.

etyres, by the way, were very good. Works through a central web ordering system but the local fitters who come out are franchisees who will therefore want to do a good job since its their own local business. The fitter seemed knowledgeable and friendly so recommended if anyone is thinking of buying their tyres online.

But, what im looking for is more completely the opposite. im looking for the grip cos its the best way to get more times out of it.

So im looking for really good, high grip tyres (used to like the dunlop r's). The rolla is only on the standard 15's but might change them.

Any ideas?

If your after GRIP and LONG LIFE then i'd say Michelin are the way, but again you can get better grip and half the life from tyres like Continentils and dunlop i think IIRC

Had a few days on the new Dunlop fastResponse tyres and am impressed so far. Good road holding, soak up bumps well and very quiet. Haven't tried them in the wet yet, tho' weather forecast suggest I may soon get to

There's nice and quiet with superb grip in the wet or dry. I find them to be better than the Mitch's that I had on the stock wheels before hand.

Was expecting heavy rain yesterday but it didn't happen. Once I have actually managed a reasonable drive in the wet I'll post something here about how the Dunlops fair. They continue to be very good in the dry ;)
