Update On Knackered Engine

Update on potentially knackered engine.

Local garage looked at car and 99% certain we have major problem. Cant be sure without taking apart. Dont want to be in position were car is in pieces in garage and forced to pay whatever it takes to get it sorted.

Need some help on this:

How do you assess what is actually damaged beyond doubt?

What are the options, depending on various repair scenarios?

Does someone have step by step idiots guide to DIY approach?

If the exchange recon engine route is most sensible what do you actually get and need to exchange ie whats stripped off and reused.

Whole engine or engine block?

Time not a factor as resigned to car being off road for long period.

Is there a book or manual which would explain process fully?

Any other useful sources of info.

Local is Central Belt in Scotland. Any recommendations for sourcing parts or engine for 1.6 petrol?

David

I know you on about doing it yourself but i mean taking out an engine isnt going to be easy if you havnt done it before of you havnt got someone who know what they are at. Even then have to have the rite tools and the space, either hire or buy them. Hoists and what not. You could end up hurting yourself or even doing more damage to the car costing more money. What going to be cheaper, having the car sitting round for months doing nothing and maybe getting a botched job of just biting the bullet and paying someones labour.

You can get doc's on toyota technical document.com or something like that, but they are not step by step and you will still need to know what your at. Haynes dont do a manual and have no plans to apparently.

What i would do is drive it only when you have to for now if t is still driving, source a second hand engine in the mean time. A good private garage should do the swap for about 250 pounds, a days labour. That going to be the quickest and prob the cheapest way of doing it.
