My Avensis From 2000 Is Beeping

Hi!

I have a Avensis 1.8 Estate from 2000 (00.08, ie before the facelift/engine shift).

Lately it has started to emit beeps now and then when I drive. It is a fast sequence of about five beeps, then it is silent for a shorter or longer period. There are no warning lights shown at the same time.

Does any one have a clue on what this alarm indicates? Does the 2000 Avensis have a seat belt warning buzzer for the passenger seat? I use to keep my laptop on the passenger seat but I have not experienced the problem earlier- or actually very seldom.

It is not the light reminder buzzer, as the light reminder alarm is different. I do however sometimes have problems also with the light reminder buzzer - if driving in rain the buzzer may sound even if the lights are not on - the remedy is to put on the lights and then put them off again.

Hi Erik,

The problem sounds like the alarm unit batteries are about to fail. They corrode on the negative lead and this in turn causes circuit problems giving the symptoms you describe. The alarm unit is behind the front bumper on the drivers side and is a bit of a pain to get to but try disconnecting the plug that goes into it and see if the beeping goes away. You don't need the alarm unit to be connected to have the centrala locking and immobiliser working.

Let me know how you get on.

Paul

Thank you for the answer. As far as I know my car does not have an alarm, it has remote central locking, but the hazard light is not flashing when you lock/unlock the car. (My car is a "Linea Luna" edition, don't know if the alarm only was fitted in some editions or for some markets).

Do you think that it can be the alarm unit anyway - I know that sometimes cars have cables/units although not actually used in that specific car.

best regards Erik

do you lock with key in lock or remote? sounds like a door is not closed properly or a door ajar switch is inop. also the micro switch in the o/s door may be starting to go. when this goes, your central locking will stop working.
