Gen 5 Air Con Cutting Out

I have a 1992 5th Gen Celica import which has developed a fault with the air con. To begin with this was intermittant but now it is permanant.

I press the aircon button and it comes on, then a few seconds later it cuts out and the green light in the button flashes to indicate a problem. But what problem?

I have had 3 garages look at it and it is definitely not low gas, as a precaution however i had a conversion to new gas and gas re-fill done.

Now the electrical problem needs to be traced but Toyota want £85+vat to plug it in to a diagnostic computer and this may not, aparently, find the fault.

Is this a known issue or has anyone experienced this with their car?

Could be a/c pressure switch if clutch kicks in and then off.i would of thaught it was low on refridgerant gas, have tha garage checked for leaks with UV dye added too the system?

Thanks for that but the garage had to convert the gas system and re-charge it because the old R12 gas was not legal aparently. Probably they costed me un-necessary money there but one thing i do now know is that there is plenty of gas in the system. The same garage told me that it was not the pressure switch.

I have since taken it to a Toyota Main dealer who told me that there was R12 gas in it and they couldn't touch that, and also the compressor was siezed...however, i know that there is no R12 now and the compressor does come on so it can't be siezed! The problem is that the compressor keeps turning off after it has started the cooling process for a few seconds.

I find the level of service and professionalism very dissapointing in both cases!

Any other ideas?

That's Toyota for you...ok at selling cars but not so good on customer service.

Take the car to a reputable air-con specialist. They will find the problem, fix and you can be on your way.

Should be alot cheaper than Toyota. -_-
