Diesel engines with their high MPG figures was supposed to be saving me money but with petrol being around 20p pl cheaper is it worth it?

Is it time to move back to petrol ... hmm?

Anybody else thought the same?

This is a valid comment. Personally I have never been attracted to diesels and with the increase in price at the pump I'll prob never go there.

The MPG is much better on a diesel tho??

I like diesels, and probably always will. Apart from the extra economy, I just like the sound. But with the difference in cost, plus the extra maintenance costs, I would certainly think twice if I was to buy a new car, as diesels tend to be around 15% dearer in the show room.

Here are some numbers

Assume 1 gallon 4.546 litres and the petrol gets 35MPG whilst the diesel gets 50MPG.

35 MPG is about 7.70 Miles per litre (35/ 4.546)

50 MPG is about 11.0 miles per litre (50/ 4.546)

10,000 miles in the petrol car uses 1299 litres (10,000 / 7.7)

10,000 miles in the diesel uses 909 litres (10,000 / 11)

If there is a 10p per litre difference in the price of unleaded and diesel you pay

1299 * 1.15 = £1,493.69 for the petrol

909 * 1.25 = £1,136.50 for the diesel

Difference, around £357. If the diesel were 48p per litre more expensive i.e 1.63/litre the costs would be within 10p for the 10,000 miles

Other things to factor in are VED costs, insurance costs, service intervals/costs and the original and residual values of the different engines.
