Mine only creaks on cold days.

Can't say it bothers me too much, once in Lift the engine and exhaust noise drown it out!!

well i managed to get the garage who i bought the car off to pay for the job to be done, so im not complaining really and glad that its sorted out because its little things like that which really annoy me when driving on a day to day basis!

all happy now, but i still suspect im due a new clutch soon, exedy stage 1 here i come.

ballist1x,

Have you got the part number for the uprated master cylinder?

What were your symptoms?

Mine creaks (definitely from the master cylinder / pedal area rather than the engine area) when using the clutch for slow speed manoeuvring etc, but only after I've been driving for a while and the car is warm. Probably does it during normal driving when warm too but can't really tell as there's less clutch "riding" (not really riding but you know what I mean) and more noise so it gets drowned out!

Car needs servicing soon so may aswell get the master cylinder changed at the same time. :)

Has anyone fitted an uprated clutch to the CTS yet? I am still jumping between a 3rd party OE replacement or an uprated one, but I'm unsure if the clutch action will get harder with an uprated one or not. I'd appreciate people's opinion on this one as my clutch is well and truly on the way out now.

your in the same spot as me. swaying towards getting somethind better, HKS do a "light action" clutch for the CTR which is what Guy Chamberlin uses. dont know if they do it for ours - too many choices. you do see Exedy come up all the time in the mags so must be something good about um. dont want to learn the expensive way with clutch - lot of work doing it on your drive!

hi there, the symptoms were creaky clutch when u press it really as you say from right under your feet, not the engine.

basically if its squeeking i think there something wrong.

part number; 31420-05011 on the box, labbelled as a cyl assy.

clutch master cylinder though for definate i think given your symptoms.

eBay usa, exedy stage 1 clutch $267+ shipping. might be worth a punt!

are you getting one? you do see um on some top motors so......... that's not a bad price

jock fran - defo master cylinder, yours same year as mine and how you describe it - if you have thin trainees on you can feel it too? i had mine done time ago - they should replace as it is a known fault hence the modded part. think they give up trying to improve the clutch tho!

If it's the same guy as I'm thinking of, then I emailed him to confirm postage costs to the UK for the standard clutch and fidanza flywheel kit (listed for the Celica GTS but is the same for the Corolla T-Sport) and he said it would be $119 for the postage. I figure if you go to the effort of taking the clutch to pieces, you might as well replace the flywheel too :D

I wonder if a bulk buy would still be $119?

do you know peeps who run these clutches? i'm interested but need feedback...........

change your slave cylinder too, biggest cause of premature clutch failure (mechanics magazine) but normally overlooked! their point was a slave cylinder might last 1 clutch life time but not 2 and if it fails it will cause premature wear on the clutch. for the sake of a few quid.........

No I don't know anyone who runs them unfortunately.

Any ideas where I can pick up a slave cylinder from and how much they cost?

thats my plan, im gonna order one next month (before my clutch expires) so at least ive got it set ad ready.

ive been heavily reading 2zz forums the last few weeks so ive been genning up my knowledge etc for this.

id say you just cant go wrong with an exedy stage 1 clutch.

They do the Exedy oe standard version for approx $99 but seen as though you are going to be paying $120 for shipping you may as well get the more expensive clutch... IMO. just do a search for Matrix 03 exedy stage 1, and you shall find it!

A lot of people are advocating Southbend TX series clutches. these look good value for money and toughened so much better than stock. Only prob is i believe you need to launch at 2k rpm to get it to "bite" and go. So you have to rev it a fair bit to get it moving, not ideal in UK traffic jams etc!

i dont think that slave cylinder failure is a massively common fault, id say Mis adjusted clutch is a most common reason for needing to actually replace the clutch itself due to wear.

if you go to a good garade to get the clutch master fitted, the will adjust your slave too, and i 99% guarantee better feel from it.

  • 2 weeks later...

OK I finally got round to calling BluePrint and they put me in contact with a local distributor. I spoke to a guy there just now and the only things he could give me a price on were the Clutch Kit (ADT 330111) and the Clutch Slave Cylinder (ADT 33662) and they came back at £87.07 and 41.25 inc vat respectively.

So now I am looking at either an OE equivalent clutch for £87.07 or an uprated Exedy Stage 1 Clutch for £151. I'm out in New York on Business in just over a week, so I am tempted to get ti delivered to the office and just stick it in my suitcase.

Has anyone had any further thoughts on the pros and cons of this decision?

sounds great can u pick one up for me whilst you're there?!

basically the labour cost is pretty much 1:1 with the cost of the oe clutch replacement so if it goes in a year or two, to me that is bad economics.

the labout should be less than the cost of the clutch, especially as you would expect the Stage 1 to last a lot longer..

i prefer to spend cash on the quality parts than on the labour fitting. if that makes sense?

Master cylinder changed today while car was being serviced.

Clutch feels soooo much nicer on slow speed manoeuvring. Well pleased.

Just to let people know, I've been ringing around this week and there are apparently no master or slave cylinders left in the country from BluePrint :( And they aren't sure a ) when the next boat is going to arrive and b ) if there will be any on there. So I've quoted both parts from John and when I get back from NY next week I'll be ordering them. Speaking of New York I asked the guy on eBay if he'd be willing to send the clutch to my office out there as it's free shipping within the States and he refused point blank even if i faxed him my driver's license etc.

I'm now following up through a guy at work who's cousin owns a garage that supply parts for some of the NASCAR teams so he's trying to grab a family discount for me. I'll probably end up with a flywheel from him, clutch from BluePrint and the master/slave cylinders from toyota lol.

Mine has a kind of click or somethink to it when you first push it down asked toyota and said it was fine. Personally my clutch feels very solid so i dont mind the creak doesnt make the clutch feel soft and its nice the way it is.
