Bit O/t Question On Tomtom One

I know its not strictly a RAV question (sorry mods) but thought it was worth asking as the TomTom forum is PANTS!!

ive got a TomTom One that wont work unless its plugged into the cigrette lighter! its really annoying. I thought it might be the Battery so bought a brand new one from eBay and fitted it myself (i was v.impressed with myself!) but it still has the same issue. Without being plugged in it wont even turn on and if i nudge the charger or pull it out - it just turns itself off.

Anyone else had this? any ideas?

im assuming my cigrette lighter is ok as my phone charges ok using it.

Hope you don't mind me asking Snowy, but have you given the Battery enough time to get some charge into it? i.e. has the charger been plugged in for more than a few minutes?

EDIT: Failing that, try sticking a pin into the little reset hole, to push the reset button.

HI Snowy, if you go to change preferences on your tom tom, then tap the arrow twice, you will get, batt saving prefs (top Right) tap that u will get 3 options for screen, tap done, you should get.. switch off when ext power is lost, if that is selected it will auto shut down when it is not plugged in, which may be your problem, I am no expert but give it a go

There will be a Battery charger circuit in the unit - and if that has failed, the original Battery will have run down and the replacement will never be able to get charged.

Not sure if anyone provides a repair service for these within economic levels. You could see if there is the same tomtom for sale on eBay with a broken screen or something and try to cannibilise bits?

I've got a Tom Tom 910 and it won't switch on unless there is lots of charge in the Battery or until I plug it in so that ties up with shcm's comments. I've not tried LH's tip on the settings but will have a look when it gets back from Portugal (Wollaston has never been at home since he had is RAV!).

It does sound very similar to yours though.

Hmm, tried this on my Tomtom One NE and there's no option about batt saving. Mine does exactly what Snowy3's does- never retains a charge and always needs the power supply. My daughter's got a mju and that's just the same

You've not met Wollaston have you? 'Salt of the earth but he's all hairy and you wouldn't want him snuggling up to you in his 2 berth caravan. I'm quite happy for him to accompany my Tom Tom!!! :P

Mines just done this every since its last update about two weeks ago, It will start up if you pop the memory card out & back in

I was going to charge it and see what happens but i normally have it connected to car Battery all the time so not a big issue at present

This will be no surprise, but I have same option as Stew - but I have exact same unit as Stew (TomTom One XL)

If this option is set, when the external power is removed, a screen pops up with a countdown saying it will shut down in 10 ...9....8 ... etc seconds unless the cancel button is tapped. When it is not set, the screen just stays on.

The Battery life on the TomToms seem pretty poor actually in general - The way Sat Navs are typically used and the characterics of the Ni-MH batteries (or Ni-Cad even ???) means that they could end up holding minimal charge after just a short time of ownership.

I don't know what mains chargers, if any, come with the SatNavs generally, but here is a nifty little thing that can be used if all you have is a car kit charging set and no way to charge in the house.

Power Inverter AC/DC 240V to 12V

Further to my earlier reply, somewhere you can alter the duration setting, so it will shut down after 1-10 secs, but i don't think this is Snowy's problem, as you can then turn it on even if it is dis-connected, Hoovies right mine is a tom tom 1 XL, but i assumed the only diff was screen size

Ok to answer questions - shcm - I have left it plugged in for journeys of 2 hours but without the cable it just shuts down. I have tried resetting it and taking the SD card out.

I have posted on PocketGPS world but no one could really help and i was pointed to another thread but it still didnt give me any solutions for my problem.

I don't get a timer when it does this - i just shuts down straight away and i have looked and i dont get the Battery saving options....?? mine is just a TomTom One not XL so dont know if you get different options?

Hoovie - that plug adapter looks very useful!!

I havent tried a new connection wire so might look into that or like Hoovie says look for a knackered tomtom on eBay. If i trust myself to fiddle with the insides!

Thanks all!

Thought i would bump this thread up as i have sorted the problem..... it was the CHARGER not the TomTom unit or Battery!! the charger disintegrated the other day so i bought a new proper TomTom one (instead of the cheap rubbish one i had before from ebay) and lo and behold its holding its charge! let that be a lesson to penny pinchers everywhere! i wasted £15 on a new Battery for no reason! DOH!
