Car Emissions

Does anyone know why toyota has some of the highest emission reports? I have a toyota corolla 1.6 vvti petrol automatic 05 plate. I have only just purchased it and had no idea it was in such a high bracket. My car is in a higher bracket than a 2L petrol injection sport audi a3. I have also checked it againt other cars that are the same spec, 1.6 petrol similar size and they are no where near to the same emission output as my rolla. Why are these cars so bad for polluting if other cars with the same size engine and cost less to buy are better for pollution? Any theries would be gratefull.

Been thinking the same here with the 2l D4-d engine ..... the PS/BHP is poor compaired to other 2l diesel cars.

The emissions are also one group higher than any other similar engine with a similar MPG figure.

I just guess the engines are an old design?

Do the cars you are using as a comparison also have automatic gearboxes? As the Autobox adds on a whole load more CO2.

He rushes off & pulls out the test results on his 17 year old Executive GL Rolla

Engine/oil temperature 84 degrees C . Limits depend on year of manufacture

Low idle CO 0.27 vol% Above 3.5% = fail

730rpm HC 219ppm Above 750ppm = fail

Not bad for an Old Lady :yahoo:

Yes you are right I was comparing it to a few cars that were manual. I did not know that automatics are a lot worse off for polution than manuals. So there you go learn a new thing every day. Thanks.,

In the same boat - have a 55 plate 1.6 VVT-i auto.

Out of interest, can someone please explain in as least technical jargon as possible why a fully automatic box has a poorer carbon footprint (or whatever the politically correct tax con phrase is)?
