Auris A Guzzler? Surely Not!

Like many motorists I woke up to the TV news this morning that there are plans for a steep rise in road tax for vehicles with high CO2 ratings in the coming years.

Up to this point I did not have a problem with that news item as I think that, unless you live on a farm as many good folk do here in West Wales, you don't need a 4-wheel drive. As a consequence I have no problem with city dwellers having to pay much higher road tax charges for their 'Chelsea Tractors' in future.

Where I have the problem is that typical examples for higher road tax charges in future were called by their make in the news this morning, ie Land Rover FREELANDER and in the same breath the speaker mentioned the Toyota AURIS.

Surely an environmental performance of 161g/km for the 1.6 litre petrol engine AURIS with MMT and 166g/km for the manual version is excellent and can't be classed a as gas guzzler.

What do they want us to drive in future, a Robin Reliant or a Trabant and risk life and limb, thereby impacting severely on the NHS in the case of an accident?

I would be interested in Toyota UK's angle on this issue as well as any reactions from UK AURIS owners.

Kind regards Hal

My T180 is going to cost 175 next year then 180 after next which i can live with... I had the Corolla T Sport before and that was going to be something like 260 for next year and 270 after next... The initial release of the new tax data back in March was what prompted me to get a diesel.

Nothing...NO CAR is worth £250 plus in tax.

You would NEVER buy a car in SWEDEN then, the tax on my Auris 2,2 D-Cat (T180) is equivalent to 388 GBP

The politicians want us all on pushbikes.Of course once we are they will find a way to tax them until we squeak.

I'm sorry for being uninformed about the taxes in other countries but are you guys talking about the yearly tax you're paying?

Yes in addition to our fuel tax!

Ah, okay.

I pay 203GBP for my 1.4 D-4D.

If it was 2.0 or 2.2 D-4D, then I would have to pay 833GBP(eight-three-three). :)

I believe that's why Toyota only have 1.4 D-4D in Turkey.

I hope mr Gordon B doesn't read that forum :D but UK is still nice place to leave in terms of taxes in Europe. I guess most of you is better off after April tax changes. I know everyone has right to make complains and I am not keen on latest VED changes but compared to other European countries is not that bad as they try squeeze motorists even more.
