Hybrid Speed

Hi everyone! I've done some reading on the pros and cons of hybrid vehicles and the majority of people agree that you spend more than you save (at least within the first 5 years or so). However, I was wondering if someone could clear up a couple of questions for me.

1. At what speed does the gas engine kick in on the Highlander Hybrid? 30km? 40km?

2. How reliable is it in a Canadian prairie winter? eg. -35C

I'm looking at purchasing a highlander hybrid for a university campus where the speed limit is 30km/hr. If the majority of our driving is on electric, we should be saving a bundle, right? Right now we spend about $12,000/year on gas with a GM vehicle!

We might be spending more upfront, but if our staff can watch the speed limit, we should recover the initial costs within a year or two!

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks!
