A 'droning' noise which may change/increase as you take a bend is likely to be a wheel bearing. If you raise the back of the car onto axle stands you may be able to detect some play by grabbing the wheel top/bottom and push/pulling etc.

A 'grinding/scraping' noise is probably pads worn to excess.

A DIY fix for the bearing is to buy a hub assembly from a breakers and bolt it on. No specialist tools are required.

Something else it could be....My 2004 Avensis had a square tyres on the back......i think from where it had sat before i bought it....but anyway they werent round and made a very similar sound to a worn bearing ....toyota had it in too check and could find nothing wrong with it but agreed the noise was there.

I then took the car to a specialist tyre dealer (not a fast fit) and he spotted it straight away, he then moved the tyres onto the front and told me the noise should come from the front now, It did, He said if i was happy drive it like that for a few days then come back and we will put two new tyres on for you, And that solved the noisy "bearing" problem on mine.
