Hi Everyone

New to this forum - had an Avensis since new 1999 V Reg, 2L Most excellent vehicle. Now the bonnet release mechanism has gone whlst bonnet was open - so cannot lock it down.

Anyone got an idea of cost? Do I go to dealer ? Can I do it myself ? Never worked on a release mechanism before.

Thanks for your impending help !!

Where did it go?

Seriously, I try a scrappie for the front clasp in the first instance. I've not tried it on a Toyota before but I did replace one on a Focus and that was pretty easy to do.

Good luck!

My 2000 Avensis 1.8GS has a similar problem but there's a quick and easy workaround - just press back the release handle (inside the car) after you've pulled it to open the bonnet. If you look under the bonnet you'll see a small spring attached to the bonnet release cable - mine is too weak to pull the release mechanism back and I used to manually push back the spring before I discovered that it's quicker (and cleaner!) to push back the interior release handle. So in my case it's just a matter of replacing a spring. Hope it helps.

the problem is not the catch , the bonnet cable is partially seized, changed loads of them for this . have never changed a catch, the sping isn't strong enough to return a poor bowden cable
