Timing Belt Change - Ring Gear Question

Hello,

I'm a person of (very) limited mechanical ability. I was going to follow the instructions in my Haynes manual to change my timing belt. The car is a 1989 Toyota Corolla (4aFC). My problem is that the manual says to jam a screwdriver or lever in the ring gear to stop the crank shaft from turning when loosening the crankshaft pulley. I have no idea how to expose the ring gear. As far as I can work out, you can do this be removing the transmission, but it seems like an awful lot of effort to go to. Is there an inspection point, or some simple way of exposing the ring gear?

I'm very much a newbie, so any pictures or basic descriptions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul.

if your mechanical knowledge is very limited are you sure your safe to undertake a job such as this, 1 slight mistake can result in bent valves conrods etc.. might be best to take to a garage?

if you still want to give it a shot then get some1 to sit in the car, put it in 5th gear and get them to put their foot on the brake pedal and undo, or find out which way the crank pulley belt goes, put a lever bar with socket on to the pulley bolt and wedge against the the floor or sommething and flick the starter with the key but don't start it up!

Sorry mate, but if you have so little knowledge you should really not be taking a job like this on.I know an 89 Corolla is probably not worth that much but it is your car and I can tell you if you mess this up(and you probably will)wave good bye to your car.

The setting of the valve timing and the tensioning of the belt is crucial so please do not scrimp on something that can end up killing your car.
