From 5 To 6 Speed Rav4?

I have a USA version 2WD RAV4 1997, with the 3SFE engine, 5 speed. Can any of the new 6 Speed gearbox be installed in my RAV4?

Welcome to the club.

Of course anything can be done if you throw enough money at it but this would be a massive undertaking. You would have to adapt the bell housing and the flywheel and clutch as the input shaft is made to marry up to a diesel engine with dual mass flywheel.

I think the short answer is no but a lot depends on how determined you are and how much money you can spare. The 6 speed box is as short as the 5 speed so accomodating it on the end of the 3SFE is unlikely to be a problem. Let us know what you decide. A project of that nature would be very interesting to follow and we have a certain Scottish member that might grimace at thought of a 3SFE diesel crossover hybrid!!!!

Funnily enough, we are looking at a 6 speed box for the sprint car as there is a wide gap in gear ratio between 2nd and 3rd. Never say never!
