OK having browsed Guido's legendary my107 blogspot has reignited my love affair with my Aygo's potential and the first way i want to go about this is fitting blue LED's to replace the horrid Orange ones... I've found out the info and even have the below link providing me how to do it: -

http://citybugowners.dk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=282

Only one minor niggle - i have about as much understanding of the Danish language as i do about Theoretical Quantum Physics (i.e. sod all) so basically can anyone help out with the translation at all?

This will be one of a few mods i wanna do to my Speedo & Tacho and looks relatively cheap to do considering what you'll end up with as a result...

I don't speak Danish either, but Danish has some resemblance with Dutch and I AM Dutch.

Perhaps I can help you out in some way, as when I look at the link and the text with the

photo's I can make out most of it through recognision and context...

Having a blue dash would look good. The blue center panel at my107 looks really good. Nice to match your headunit.

Jan thanks for that - as far anyone else, please feel free to contribute to this thread with your translations :D

Refitting the Aygo with blue instument lighting.

Original Danish text can be found Here

Please not that I do NOT speak Danisch at all and that I made this translation from recognition

of a lot of the grammar to my native Dutch and with use of an on-line translator.

Italic text denotes translations I'm not 100% sure about.

I can't seem to get the images to work either, so just click the links provided...

Since I haven't done this myself (and probably never will) I also can't besure if my translation/

interpretation is correct. If you break something doing this modification that is NOT my problem!!!

So lets get on with translating:

+++++

Tools needed:

Philips head screwdriver

10mm socket + ratchet

flat head screwdriver

Soldering iron

Solder

Desoldering wire

4 pcs SMD chip LED (like these: http://www.matronics.dk/produkter/Biler/Lo...kt/130235.aspx)

2 pcs 1,2W T5 LEDs (like these: http://www.matronics.dk/produkter/Biler/In...t/121111o.aspx)

DISCONNECT THE Battery!

You need to disconnect the entire speedo,

leaving elsewise "hot" leads exposed.

Picture

Unscrew the Philips head screws behind the steering wheel and remove the upper speedo-cover.

Picture

Unscrew the 10mm bolts holding the speedo.

Picture

Unplug ALL connectors on the back of the speedo.

Picture

The mess of plugs left behind in the car.

Picture

Take this bit inside with you to start the real work.

Take off the trasparent cover by prying at the tabs all around the speedo.

Picture

Now carefully pry off the speedo's neelde, use a fork to apply upward force,

put something underneath so you won't score the surface of the face plate.

Picture

The face plate is clipped on and can be removed carfully by hand without any tools.

You can then take off the transparent light distribution

plate by pressing on the barb in the lower left corner

Picture

Now unscrew the white plastic bit from the brown plastic bit.

(leave the screws that hold the PCB in place in for now)

Picture

Now pull the white bit wit the PCB behind it up, you can start at the lower corners

Picture

Once you have both parts separated the soldering begins.

Picture

Using the desoldering wire, desolder the row of connections for the display.

Make sure you desolder ALL pins properly and do not short any pins out.

Picture

Now remove the PCB from the white plastic bit (remove the remaining screws if needed).

As you can see, some of the plastic around the pins melted.

Picture

Replace the 4 marked SMD-LEDs by ones in your choice of color.

Put everything back in reverse order and you're done!

+++++

Refitting the LEDs in the center console has been described allready,

so I didn't bother to translate that too...

A personal not I'd like to add is to make sure you check direction of the LEDs BEFORE you close everything up.

If you DID accidentally reverse one you don't have to go through the entire process again!!!

Good luck,

I have done this on a friends Astra dash and what I will add to that is to solder each LED's one-by-one and check it regularly by plugging it in to ensure the LED's are all working. They are very easy to burn out with the soldering iron.

Do not try and replace more than one LED at once as you WILL forget where it came from (learn from others mistakes).

Fantastic stuff - thanks everyone!

All i need is someone who has a soldering iron and solder with the knowledge of how to use it properly and i'll be cooking...

If you've never soldered before I'd try and get a scrap PCB to practice on first, soldering surface mount components is a tricky job and the last thing you want to do is lift a pad or track off the PCB. I used to run a test and repair dept at an electronics company and our SMT rework station cost about £1500 and had a special tweezers style iron for removing things like the package the LEDs are.

I've decided not to do this myself anyways - was never confident about it, would rather have someone else do it for me...

No-one will want to take it on.

Looking at the links on the Danish site we`ve come to the conclusion that the Osram TOPLED SMT Package LBT67C-PS21-35 should fit the bill. So just ordered some from RS (654-5290). Hopefully these should be dropped into the speedo next week, the heater bubble ones i`ll take out and nip round to Maplins and match them. Looks like i`ll have to put the Bird`s headunit on hold for now as the CSA want some backpay so will probably look into changing the standard stereo fascia to blue as well.

If you mean changing the LED's/Diodes in the OE Toyota Headunit to blue then do keep us posted - over the next two months i shall be getting a TomTom Dock fitted so ideally wanting to change all the interior lights to blue...

Yes that`s what i`ll look at getting done. Our electronics guy at work is a bit handy with this type of stuff and he`s already said it looks a doddle and has ordered the parts in. It`ll be done in the next couple of weeks so i`ll post details.

Bump for this thread

I assume then that no-one is able to do this for me at all? Ideally i would like to get this done as it's a bit of an eye sore having an orange backlit speedo and tacho and a blue backlit heater module and headunit combo... Looks a bit Terry's Chocolate Orange!!

If need be i can source the parts and send them to someone in order for them to do it.

Any takers?

I can do this for you, but since I'm in The Netherlands,

logistics are quite "tricky" to say the least...

I've done several over the past year, it's all pretty straigh forward to be

honest, but some experience and specialist tools maken it a LOT easier...

I can do a speedo and tacho in about 2 hours...

Posted

You need to get a mail order service up and running Jan.

I would be happy to pay for your time and postage to have my speedo and tacho changed to blue.

I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one!

Posted

Firstly, spot on job Jan - you are a true Gent :)

I had to read the full thread to understand what this thread was all about - it is (just in case anyone else is wondering) changing the instrument lighting to blue (or whatever colour) :)

Posted

I'd happily do this by mailorder, but then you'd be out of a car for 1 to 2 weeks!

Once the speedo is out of the car NOTHING will work anymore, as the

main power distribution is situated on the back of the speedocluster...

And the Dutch and UK postal services aren't really fast to be honest...

Hey Jan

I would definately be interested in doing this however i will be sourcing brand new parts from the Toyota dealer to replace the current ones to ensure that i'm not off the road...

Will PM you later on Jan :D
