I had a chat with a Toyota Tech Guy on here quite some time ago about this as he posted in the Y-TS section regarding the horrid gear changes and claimed to have a solution.

Just found the link again here Must be worth a try as it would cost pennies to get the required parts. As I stated at the end, I have a TRD shifter and brand new oil in the gear box and the changes are slightly improved but still pretty nasty.

I got a big problem with my gear box. When shifting into 1st its got loads of free play in the gear. It looks like its in third. When shifting into second it looks like its in forth. This the same with all the gears. 5th looks like it in third. The problem is with the left and right linkage. I had a look on the gear box. The left right linkage is the problem but i don't have a clue on how to adjust it.

i was gonna have my box rebuilt but see little point as the parts havent been changed/upgraded. i put decent oil in the and the box is much smoother and the crunch in 3rd is not noticeable any more and she goes into second even when cold almost perfectly. know a guy who works for vw/audi dealer in chester and they dont replace while its under warranty - they prefer to wait until the customer foots the bill!!

is it any wonder garages get a bad name why not change it under warranty and let the manufacturer pay the bill for faulty parts rather than the customer glad we change parts under warranty where i work may be why were so busy .!!!!!

I know they will be different boxes, but the guy who worked on the Yaris'/Yarii (no idea what the plural is) said he also did it on a number of corollas with the same effect.

well got car back from toyota today was told its characteristic to that perticular gearbox as is on the celica .so i rung toyota customer services who also said the same as not enough people had complained about the gearbox so it wasn,t an issue .so you guys best start contacting customer services and start complaining .apparently toyota do not consider it to be a fault because it does not reduce the performance of the vehicle or its reliabilty .so i guess its the big V,s to people who drive toyota,s with a problem if not enough people complain about it .my estimation on toyota customer service is diabolical .

i understand that you are a lil bit peeved but they are kinda right - its not a fault as such as the box does what its meant to do but they are telling porkies cos a few i know of have been rebuilt....... to no avail. it is a common "charatistic" worldwide with all corolla's with the 2zz - regardless of where they are built. never noticed any celica t sport/190 owners complaining about there jap built box?

well i have to say this is no longer characteristic to my corolla now as the crunching has now been solved .the gears are 100%improved and are very smooth and gear selection from cold is good so am now satified . :yahoo:
