This is first time post so apologies if anything is wrong. I have just bought a 1998 Gen 6 GT. I have since read about the dreaded oil problem and wonder if it is confined to early VVTi engines or could I suffer the same problem? Any help greatly appreciated

Welcome.

I've never heard of that problem affecting the Gen 6; the various engines used in the gen 6 tend to be very strong indeed.

You still need to look after them - regular oil and filter change etc - but I don't think you should be alarmed by the problems that affected the early Gen 7s.

Thanks for the info! Put my mind at ease. I will be changing oil, filters etc this weekend.

Gen 6's are generally a lot tougher but as said make sure u regularly check your levels, once a week at least, my gen 6 st drank 4 litres of oil in 2 weeks...turned out there was a hole in the cylinder and blew the big end bearings...needed a new engine :( Also use toyota specific oil filters rather than the Halfords once..they're not as good.
