Hi All,

Just been out waxing the Aygo.

Very surprised to see a bubbling rust spot at the small vertical of the roof, between the front windscreen and the main part of the roof.

Anyone had a similar problem? Please check your car closely in this area.

I plan to take the car to the dealer and expect it to be fixed under warranty. Will post what they say.

That car shouldnt have rust on it yet but it could have been a stone chip or something and thats what Mr T will prob say

In my defence, there is nothing really visible, certainly no dent. There are other chips on the bonnet/wings, none of them are showing ANY sign of rusting.

If they try to reject my claim, I will say that this bit may have poor zinc coating and/or paint.

Weird. I had that exact same problem. It was just where the roof meets the windscreen about 6 inches in from the side. The car was due a service at the time so I asked the dealer to look at it. They said it was a stone chip and wouldn't be covered under warranty. My argument was that yes, maybe it is a stone chip, but it shouldn't have rusted so quickly. They refused to fix it under warranty, so I gave it a rub down and put some touch-up paint on it, but it came back a few weeks later. So I rubbed it down, applied some rust remover, primer, 2 coats of silver and a couple of laquer and so far it's been OK. That must have been about 4 months ago now.

So, seeing as you have the same problem, do we have an Aygo rust problem in that spot? Did we both get unlucky? Are the aerodynamics of the car directing stones to that spot so it's susceptible to chips? Hmmm...

I have a similar problem:

I have 3 dots on the roof that look like rust only very small however (a couple of mm). But I will show them this at service. They are right in the middle of the roof so no excuses really.

That is like the rust on mine, exactly like it.

If a number of people are starting to report exactly the same rust spots in the same place it's starting to look like a fault with the finishing in that location. Looking at the picture I find it suprising that the 'stone chip' just happens to have hit the exact corner of bodywork. Is the paint particularly thin on the corners ?

I would be tempted to put the complaint about the rust in writing, post it to the garage and copy it to Toyota UK (recorded delivery is good here). If they still refuse lodge the complaint with your local Trading Standards and let them have a go at it.

The final one to try is, if you paid for any part of your car on credit card (or other credit agreement I think) the credit company are also liable for maintaining the warranty/services if the original company doesn't (section 75, Consumer Credit Act). The credit card company may contact them on your behalf to argue the case instead of having to pay out themselves, and they will probably want to try and recover their costs from Toyota later as well. So once you've given Toyota a reasonable chance to fix the problem the threat of a credit card company coming after them might encourage them to make a good will gesture and fix the problem.

Had same problem and same place about 6 inches in! and toyota sprayed part of the roof which im not happy with as by time it would show in my opinion and the job isnt that perfect either!

Other places to look for rust is under the 3rd brake light (take it off and look under it) as thats when i found out about mine and it was rusting badly on the inside! they said they would fix that like they did with the first one and i dont like that!

I haven't noticed any rust but will check

That's really shocking to hear of cars so young rusting & seeing as the spots are all appearing in the same place surely Toyota can't shy away from it - it's too many to be coincidence.

Plus think of how many other people who aren't members of forums who could well have the same problem.

Looks like I've got a stone chip above the windscreen too, but it's in a slightly different place further in.

Checked behind the upper brake light and no problems there.

Is it really a stone chip or a weak area of paint on Aygos?

Seems a few people are reporting this. Even it a stone chip was the catalyst, it should NOT rust. Stone chips on the bonnet and wings of our car are NOT rusting!

Well, still waiting for someone to inspect this after a month, or more!

If you have noticed this problem on your car, please post. The more info I have the better.

We've all got 12 year anti-perforation warranty. It will be cheaper for toyota to fix it now than if it were to rust through

The 12 year anti-perforation warranty is just that.....................if it rusts through within 12 years they will repair it...........not before :(

I thought the perforation warranty only covers from the inside out! ie, water ingress behind a panel causing the damage

An update on this...

After a long wait of about 5 weeks for the Toyota inspector to make it to the garage, I put the Aygo in with a covering letter explaining why I expected a warranty repair. I also printed a copy of this thread to show that this was not a one-off.

Thankfully the inspector agreed that the rust spot should be repaired under warranty, so the car will be going in sometime soon. I will report on how the job looks when I get the car back.

Thanks to all who posted on this thread, I am sure you helped me get a positive decision from Toyota. :)

As the rust seems to start at the leading edge of the roof where it meets the top of the windscreen, it could be that water is getting in between the screen and the edge of the roof and there is not sufficient paint protection at this point, so the rust begins and spreads inwards from this point under the paint. If the repair doesn't take this into consideration and just cleans up and paints over the rust patch, then it's probably a matter of time before it re-appears.

We too have an Aygo (56) that has developed small spots of rust (size of 5p) on roof by top of windscreen and corner of roof joint with front pillars. I have noticed other posts about same problem - Could Toyota have a problem with the paint or coverage? Or could we all just be getting stone chips in exactly the same place ?

Would like to know how your friend got on, :)

Hi Guys,

I am a new member on this forum and mostly went here due to this tread about Aygo rust above windscreen.

My Aygo has the exact same problem and I just went to service with it - the dealer took some photos to Toyota Denmark as he tried to convince me that it was stone chip. My Aygo also has some rust spots in the right door.

I will let you guys know the result when Toyota Denmark returns with their answer.

I have the same problem on my Aygo Blue!!!! Its on the windscreen pillars, and I know it was a stone chip because it cracked my windscreen, and ricocheted off my windscreen pillar. :crybaby:

Esentially what is rust?

"Rust is scientifically called oxidation, which occurs when oxygen comes in long-term contact with certain metals. Over time, the oxygen combines with the metal at an atomic level, forming a new compound called an oxide and weakening the bonds of the metal itself. If the base metal is iron or steel, the resulting rust is properly called iron oxide. Rusted aluminum would be called aluminum oxide, copper forms copper oxide and so on.

Some pieces of iron or steel are thick enough to maintain their integrity even if rust forms on the surface. Others are protected by water-resistant paints or other chemical barriers such as oil. The thinner the metal, the better chance rusting will occur. Water alone does not cause steel to rust, but the acidic reaction allows oxygen to attack vulnerable exposed metal. Placing a steel wool pad in water and exposing it to air will cause almost-immediate rusting. The air around the pad will actually feel several degrees warmer. Eventually the individual iron bonds will be destroyed from the heat and the entire pad will disintegrate. Rust formation cannot be stopped easily, but metals can be treated to resist the most damaging effects."

Basically ANY bare metal that is exposed to air, (oxygen) will rust. As soon as you have a stone chip - then seal it from air, water, dirt - etc.

I use Kurust from Halfords. It seals the metal from the elements.

P.s Carefull if you have light colour paints. I ve noticed the Kursust liquid turns a shade dark!
