05 Avensis Hatch - Wiring Help

Hi Guys,

I'm expecting delivery of an 05 Avensis Hatch 1.8 T3-S

I am about to order my towbar for delivery the same day and have it fitted PDQ since i need my bike rack in use the following day.

Problem is I want to include a relay to protect the ECU and don't know which one fits properly.

The two items i'm looking at are a generic relay (which i think may need a feed run from the Battery directly)

http://stores.channeladvisor.com/towbar/It...em%20TF2217Ukit

or the Vechicle specific one

http://stores.channeladvisor.com/towbar/It...s%205dr%2003%3e

Thing is I cant find anywhere stating whether the 05 has a socket in the lights, or a towing socket to plug this socket into ??

Does anyone know ?????

I used to just Scotch-lock the wires together on previous cars golfs/older avensis but wan't to do this one properly to protect the car.

Any help would be very greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

- Cale

To caledonia 2k,

The company you are purchasing Tow Bar from should be able to supply you with corect relay. Modern cars have canbus wiring which allows different voltage to be carried by same wire in most cars for rear lights. Golf for ex: has a live feed to rear of vehicle which you can use as a supply to relay unit.

If you have no live feed at back you will have to run supply wire up to Fuse-Box, this has to be done properly by lifting trim & carpets etc & ensuring wire cannot rub against floor pan etc causing short circuits. Forget Scotch-Locks & ensure wiring is soldered & all joints are covered via heat shrink shrouding.

Best left to the experts if you don't feel confident enough to carry out job yourself. If a bumper of job, the rear accident damage crumple zone bar will be removed in most cases for Tow-Bar fitment, make sure this is placed in rear of car for possible future fitment if bar is removed for ie: possible future sale.

Hope this helps rather than hinders.

Thanks Beagh.

It is a bumper off job, and I was lplanning to save any removed parts (I usualy do, and save them in the garage)

The wiring kit which is vehicle specific (on original post) is for the 05 Avensis, but since i don't have the car yet, I was just hoping to find out where to locate this socket it specifies.

Other than that, a Smart Cardbus relay unit is the other alternative.

Thanks,

Cale.

If purchasing from official Toyota dealer, maybe a quick call to Toyota technical may supply answer or another way . Forum user by the name of Parts-King is a regular on forum he may come in with answer.

No it's not from an official Toyota dealer.

They wanted 460 quid for the fitted thing, whereas the bar electrics and removable ball is less than 200 from places like towequipe and towshure.

Caledonia, I'm in the same position as you and am eager to find a DIY answer to this wiring difficulty.

I've done alot of research and haven't yet come up with an exact answer.

Here are some possibly useful links for info

It will probably be September before I buy a towbar so I haven't given up hope yet.

Let us know if you find a solution. Thanks.
