Idle Air Control Valve

Does anyone know how to test the IAC valve on pre-2000 models?

What should be the resistance across it when removed or voltage being sent to it at idle speeds when connected?

(No, even after all these months and really helpful advice from this forum, the RAV4.1 still defeats working properly [high tickover idle when warm and now scrupulously clean] — the Toyota garage seems to solve all problems by replacing every part until the fault goes away and my patience is wearing very thin indeed having achieved partial rebuilds to two old European engines where all information is freely available!)

Sorry to have been absent for the last month or two, but to tell the end of the tale, even with the really helpful information provided by Anchorman, I could not crack the fault, thus second big mistake (do I never learn? The first one was going to an alleged Toyota private mechanic) was to take it to a local down-south Toyota & 4WD specialist. He did cure a small exhaust leak, but other than that made the running much worse and all for £250!

I eventually bit the bullet and took it into Currys, the main Toyota dealer — half a day, a new idle valve and several hundred pounds and I now know quite why some of you have such enthusiasm for the Rav. Been to Wales and the Westcountry from London a couple of times and find that even when fully loaded with junk, it is both nippy and economical.

It will be returning to Scotland once I turn my attention to the other problem of a separate posting.

Thanks for those who tried to help,

George

Sorry to hear of your tale of woe with the faults and hope the oil leak is not serious. Theres plenty of oil at anchor in the Flow if you can make it back for a top up!!!!!

We're on our 2nd Rav and touch wood have had no mechanical problems so far, albeit both bought from new. You Vikings still doing a lot of travelling?
