Replacing Stereo In Mr2 Mkiii

Hi there

My boyfriend bought a MR2 MKIII Roadster [03 plate] at the weekend. We both absolutely love it, I am thrilled as l get to drive it too [the insurance is actually cheaper with me as named driver, how good].

Anywho l've bought him an ipod nano for his birthday so he doesn't have to carry loads of CD's around [given the limited storage space!] but l want to find him a cheapish stereo too as obviously it needs replacing with one that has aux in. I've been reading up and wondering if this is something he can fit himself [he's good with stuff like that] or if we need to get the monkeys in Halfords to mess around with it?? Also as the new stereo will be DIN and the original is huge where would l go to find a blank faceplate to fill the gap? [Ebay?] Also do we need any kind of adaptor/connector or can a new stereo just plug in?

I've been looking at both Kenwood and Sony models, there seem to be a lot available that are about £50. Is this going to be a case of you get what you pay for? He will generally be using the ipod and also the radio - we won't be replacing the Speakers so I'm guessing a cheaper stereo will be fine?

Any advice would be great, especially on the actual fitting. Thanks!

You might want to pick up an ISO to Toyota adapter.[plug stock wire into this and the the male into the back of the new radio.

I took this while installing and re-arranging

I picked up the glove pocket as a filler from Halfrauds. But i think you can order a blank flat plate,i just cant remember where, sorry.

Oh yes, down the sides youll see a gray[mine are done black] thing/cap,this has to be pulled off, there are two dots on each one, they are not covers.behind the plastic when its off are the two screws, take them out, lightly pull the long side plastic towards you and down.Just a tip if you need to get them off.repeat for the other side.

A reluctant trip to hellfords will sort your adaptor out, and with the head unit it is a get what you pay for moment. I parted with 150 pounds for an Alpine Ipod only head unit, but these can be found for much closer to 120. This has full control on the head unit, so as to stop you having to mess around with two bits of equipment in the cramped cockpit.

I'll get some pictures up of mine *cough*when it get's back from the garage*cough*
