My Celica

Does the the engine thermostat operates the overdrive on the Celica GT AUTO 89-Freg. Over the last few weeks i have noticed a couple of problems with the overdrive on it. Last week i drove to Birmingham from Leeds and i had driven 12 miles and the overdrive had not come on so i pulled over in to a petrol station and checked the water in the radiator, which was ok so i carried on and straight away the overdrive came on and everything was ok. A few more miles down the road for some reason the overdrive switched itself off for no apparent reason whilst i was driving. I have noticed though that the heaters are not brilliantly warm and do occasionally blow out cool air. Can anyone please help?

Check the fluid level for your gearbox. I assume you are talking about the overdrive on an auto gearbox. The change mechanism on these relies on oil pressure(within the gearbox not the engine). Check under the car for signs of oil leaks from the gear box, if you find one get it fixed as soon as possible, auto boxes are generally very reliable but if they do go wrong are very expensive to fix and losing oil is the best way to break them. It is nothing to do with the engine thermostat

Have the same problem with my Celica.....since I had radiator replaced, but only noticed it like you, when on the motorway, in winter!

When I stop for a minute the temp gauge goes back up, and then it goes into o/drive.

According to internet search, its the wrong thermostat, or thermostat sticking open. Cant wait to get home from holidays to shout at the garage! :arrgg-matey:
