Car Starts But No Electrics Working

I am so sorry this is my first post but I need to sort this problem out for my Mrs! She has a V reg 1.8 Avensis which has had no end of trouble with the electrics. I am giving her my beloved Alfa 147 so I need to make sure this problem is fixed for my sake! Iv searched this forum but cant seem to find anything; again I apologise for not contributing earlier to the forum.

The engine starts and the car works but the electrics dont! The indicators, radio, fans etc. She has had 2 mechanics/electrical specialists look at it and they cant find anything or it works fine when they have it. It always tends to happen in the morning. If you press the hazard light switch they come on?! Not sure what that indicates?

Has anyone experienced this before? I think it must be a loose wire; Iv checked all fuses and they work fine. Is there anything I/we can do before I smash it up with a baseball bat?! :)

Thanks everyone.

A bit of an odd one. Having had specialists look at car with no joy, if you have a mind to why not have a good look yourself. Not a lot to go on -guess work really. Why not start at Battery & follow your live cables to Alternator & Starter motor insuring all cables are secure & not rubbing or fouling against other items. Check you earth lead from Battery to all other earthing points around engine bay & gearbox. Possible water ingress into fuse-box within car or engine bay? Just to many variables. Have had fault quite similar to yours on other brand of car which ended up being a combination of loose wiring at Ign-Key base & a loose earth wire to G/Box following garage fitting new clutch to car. Keep us posted would be interested to know of final fix.

Thanks for this; you may actually of figured it out for me! We had ignition problems a year or so ago and had it repaired by the garage the car is at, at the moment. Thinking about it, they may have got the wiring wrong and this is why the fault keeps happening. I will contact the garage and ask them to look at the ignition AGAIN!!

Kris, they were old posts.  My view is you unlikely to get a reply.  Why do I say that?  If you click on the persons name (or the coloured box with their initial in) you will find some info about that poster.   In this instance Spongebange (S) has not been on the forum since 7 August 2008 (2 days after his original post). Beagh1958 (B) has not been on the forum since February 2011.

You probably best starting a new post of your own in the Avensis forum and explain your problem so far.

Hi !

Thanks for you reply !

Yeah spotted they are gone from forum but guess what, spend the afternoon and found the issue ! 🙂

So issue was:

all of sudden EPS, ABS light on dash, no power on vent fan, windows, audio but car was still running. Also first thing spotted alternator seems not charging.

after testing fuses, checking connections around found that someone instead replacing bypassed 100 Amp alternator fuse and "bypass wire" fell off. After returning it back all worked back normal !!!

so...getting proper new fuse tomorrow to get it properly sorted !
