New Owner With Some Questions..

Hi all,

If you've read the ISOfix post you'll know I won a Rav4 on eBay recently, link is below:

our eBay RAV

Considering we bought unseen, a heinous crime in my book. It turned out well with only a few niggles but mostly positives.

Positives: Loving the spec, the leather seats, good stereo, chunky side steps, bull bar on the front, the colour scheme, the versatility, air con blows cold. It was definitely a wise purchase decision with a small person on the way.

What needs fettling with:

There's a slight grinding when applying the brakes, thought this was the grime clearing from the disks as it had been stood a while but it's persisting so I'm suspecting the front pads need a change. Rear pads look ok as do all the disks. However, it's a bit hard to check the front pads without taking the wheel off. Is there any way it can be done easily? We don't have a brake pad warning light on but I reckon it's only a matter of time. It did just pass its MOT though.

CD Changer - for some reason the CD changer under the front passenger seat won't eject. I've only fiddled with the wires at the back so far but still no joy. I guess there's room for the wires to be stretched with the seat moving backwards and forwards all the time?

Rear Seats - wow, took these out for the first time and was surprised and pleased with the amount of available space. This car will also be replacing our trusty Volvo 940 GLE estate which has acres of room so it was good to see so much space. Question is, I imagine after a time it'd be easy to catch the leather when removing etc, I was very careful this time but I can imagine its easily done. So is there a known knack or preferred method for rear seat extraction?

There are one or two stone chips on the front but nothing major. Is there a resource online where touch up sticks can be purchased from? There's also a small repair to the rear bumper which could have been neater but that's about it.

Overall, we're delighted and just need to sell our MR2 (which is on eBay with no reserve) before small person arrives!

Thanks all!

Looks a nice car

I bought touch-up paint direct from Toyota Dealer - two pack with little brush and buffer built in - about £8 I think. If you PM Kingo (Parts-King) with your registration, he can quote you a price..

I found the seat removal comes easier with practice - maybe get a couple of cheap travel rugs and use them as protectors as you remove the seats and carry them about?

Front pads are easy to change and cost under £40 from the dealer. Check your discs are OK though. You may also find that a bit of grit may be lodged between the pads and disc causing the noise.

So when you press the eject button behind the slide screen.. you should hear the cd's as it puts them in the changer then it ejects it... Are you saying yours is silent.

Question is, I imagine after a time it'd be easy to catch the leather when removing etc, I was very careful this time but I can imagine its easily done. So is there a known knack or preferred method for rear seat extraction?

I generally cover mine up when leaving them in the shed..as you've said they could get marked...Just be careful removing them through the rear doors...as they are quite awkward to manoeuvre....9 time out of 10 i just tilt mine up... fits my mountain bike in no problems...

Enjoy the RAV as no doubt you will......Welcome to the RAV 5 Door Club as well

Yep, CD changer is completely silent when eject is pressed. As if there is no power going to it at all. I guess the next thing to do is unplug it at the rear and get a multimeter on the cable that's feeding it.

Is there a handy guide on here anywhere about the correct process for changing the pads? It looks straight forward enough, I'm assuming the calipers stay put?

Thanks all, really looking forward to this car:)

What MR2 do/did you have?

Brakes - ye anchorm,an has a wee bit of knowledge in this area.

CD changers - me not interested

Toyota calipers - I know more than most people on these!

MR2 - having bought 3 in the last 12 months always interested!!!! But only turbos!!

Having brats? Well I have 4 so I suppose I am well versed in that arena?

good luck

Thanks Anchorman, PM'd accordingly I think/hope.

FYI.. - I checked the front pads the other day with the wheel off and although a bit corroded there was plenty of depth. However the rust on the disks has pitted them slightly and I suspect this is where the grind (which is lessening through use) is coming from.

Anyway, we have it booked in with our local mechanic friend for a once over and asked him to examine the disks/pads so will await his recommendation. However the pad change info will no doubt still be useful for future reference!

Thanks again, from reading the many threads you seem to be the Rav4 superhero. Your assistance is much appreciated!

Kind Regards

P.S. - Bothwell-Buyer the MR2 is a UK '94 mk2 Rev3 in red. Currently floundering at the mercy of eBay bidders...

I'd've guessed that the discs would be rusty with the car lying especially as its been so humid. It just takes a couple of days.

Once you've run around and the pads have cleaned off the discs, all should be well. For interest, the minimum thickness of the discs is forged into the rear of the disc. Just get yer mechanic pal to make sure the calipers are not jamming on or sticking as the Toyota fronts are, I found, poor for this.

Hi zoom jones.

Just taken a quick shufty at yer MR2 on eBay. Sorry, can't see that selling mate - may I suggest a couple more pics for your potential punters perusal. Not sure if 51 is quite enough!!! When's new sprog due? We just aquired Rav4 too: our sprog due 31Dec. Hoping it'll be late; be a shame to miss it due to New Years festivities. Hey ho! Good luck with the sale
