The Environmental Transport Association has looked at over 1300 models of car currently on sale in Britain and examined their power, emissions, fuel efficiency and even the amount of noise they produce to create the definitive guide to buying the greenest vehicle.

The Car Buyers’ Guide was first published by the ETA in 1992 in response to requests from its growing membership and has since become the environmental benchmark for the car industry and the public, championing the greenest cars in Britain.

The results for 2008 are as follows:

This year the Car Buyers Guide has ranked the following cars as the top 10 overall:

1 Toyota Yaris OVERALL WINNER

2 Honda Civic Hybrid

3 Toyota Prius

4 Renault Modus

5 Citroën C1

6 Peugeot 107

7 Toyota Aygo

8 Renault Clio

9 Toyota Auris

10 Suzuki Swift

Four Toyota's in the top ten can't be all bad news

it surprised me that the Yaris was top - especially as noise was a factor.

Juat about every Yaris I know has a massive audio install in the boot and can be heard from space !

I thought that as well, not sure what criteria was used, as you say it should be joint 5th

I always knew the Yaris was a good little car - oh and Rich mine doesn't have a big fat audio install - just an ipod cradle! :P
