T180 Reversing Camera

Hello all,

This is my first post after some months of reading the rav forums, i drive a 06 T180 which I have been lucky enough not to have had any problems with the much discussed RFT's.

One thing which niggles me no end, and have not found on the forum is the reversing camera system now fitted on the T180 (well the last few manufactured anyway)

MY CAR DOES NOT HAVE IT!! Looking through the handbook it does give details of the system and how it works, have I been ripped off or is it an after sale option and is the wiring already fitted in the car for it?

I am considering writing to Toyota UK as I am not getting any answers from my dealer

Dazed and confused

Cheers.

Hello Ratchet and welcome to the club.

An 06 T180 will not have a reversing camera fitted as standard. Yes the harness is already installed. Have a look in our Hints and Tips section and all will be revealed! :D

thanks for that shcm, why did they not just give us 180 owners the thing in the first place, why bother putting the harness in with no camera.

Where is the camera fitted on the latest T180's, i have not seen one yet or are they that small I am missing it?

T180's tend to move pretty fast after all!

If they have appeared on T180s in the UK, I expect they are in the place they were always intended to be, but I haven't seen one so I can't be sure. This diagram shows the location:

As for why it wasn't there in the first place, there could be any number of reasons. Maybe at launch the camera didn't meet Toyota's quality/reliability standards, so they decided to leave it off and further develop it with their supplier. Things like this do happen, despite people's best efforts and less importance may have been applied to the part as it is not critical to the overall function of the vehicle. It may not have made sense logistically to change the harness at a late stage in development/early production.

I've worked on experimental vehicle vision type systems electronics and I know that at one time it was very difficult to get CCDs (image sensors) that would work over a temperature range of -40C to +85C, for example. Your standard consumer electronics would not have such a demanding specification. I expect most of the aftermarket ones do not fully meet an "automotive" specification, but they will work for most people most of the time.

In this type of scenario Toyota may have decided it would be more trouble than it was worth.

Or they could have just left it off to save money.....who knows ! :D

Cheers

You may well be right, but the Italians at least were "retro-fitting" them, so maybe not everywhere:

There were some pics of the Italian installations as well, but I can't seem to find them at the moment.

Anyway, I'm just making the point that occasionally things are left off for other reasons rather than fleecing/cheating the customer. I'm not suggesting it was left off for a technical reason, but I can see that it's not beyond the bounds of possibility.

Cheaper to make a loom that is used on multiple varients then different ones (including ones for different countries)

As an example, Honda have a habit of not fitting rear Speakers in many of their cars, but there is always wiring for the rear Speakers ready to be used.

Hoovie,

off topic as usual, but did your motor have the wiring in place for the heated seats that you fitted? Have you tested them in anger yet?

Best regards

Chris

Nope, it didn't (sort of negates my earlier comment, huh :D ).

I have used the drivers a little and it is very nice indeed. As far as wiring goes, they were very simple to wire up. They are fused with a 3A fuse total for both seats and there is both the Cigar lighter and Accessory socket very handy, both rated at 10A load, so tapped off that supply.

Any one wanting a reversing camera on a Rav, ought to be questioning their ability to drive. !!!!!

John 1944, I appreciate your senior years but, even so I would not dream of pontificating and questioning anyones ability to drive, simply because they show interest in a reversing camera. Quite simply, this topic on the forum has raised my interest in this subject again, especially when, for example, I am trying to safely retrieve £10k's worth of jetski, when time is of the essence in rough surf, and I need to see how near the tow-bar is to the trailer hitch, which is virtually impossible without guidance from a third party. I sincerely recommend that you engage brain before putting fingers on the keyboard.

Very best regards

RaverT180 aka John (also)

Personally, I believe I am a good driver (doesn't everyone think they are :D) and a damn fine reverser, but the RAV4 is possibly one of the most awkward cars to reverse park I have ever had, especially when the car behind is front on.

So a Reversing camera would be a very handy attribute to have (and if I have a car that was prewired to accept one - it would be fitted right now!!)

Hi Hoovie, agree with you, my 4.2 Rav and my current T180 have been the hardest cars to reverse park as you say, even my fiance's Freelander is easier.

Dave M fitted a reversing camera to his 4.3, it was wireless + seem to remember only about £50 from costco,, Hoovie can't see a bit of wiring stopping you from fitting one..Raver T180, are you sure you want to marry a girl with a nedflander? IMO these mixed marriages never work

if you insist on going ahead with this, you will need to get a special dispensation, from Mr T. you will also have to agree that any offspring will have to become members of TOC from birth, and you will have to buy them an Aygo on reaching 17 yrs of age..:yes:

I did like Dave Ms install  £50 was a bargain I reckon, but I am gonna have to save that for next year as I am fully Pimped out wallet-wise (I have two more items to fit but they are a surprise so you will have to wait and see ;) )

One of them wouldn't be the multi media system that Chatman hoisted out of that citreon at the motor show would it?

Alright, so I have established that the much discussed reversing camera is not on my T180 for various reasons, but it is not all bad news, at least the harness is in place.

Has anyone had the "official" toyota camera fitted in the trim above the reg plate? If so how much did it cost.................

Can someone post a picture of the location so i can see what it looks like.......

thanks guys
