Problem With 2001 Corolla Gearbox

Hi, I am a new member. I've got a 2001 Corolla which I love driving. I've had it from new and have had it serviced regularly by the dealership I bought it from. I've recently been told there is a problem with the gearbox which needs replacing - conservative estimate is £1,500!!! i've only done 80,000 miles and various people have expressed surprise that the gearbox has gone so soon. is this typical of the corolla? what is their general life span? i'm concerned about paying out a lot of money to get it fixed and then it deteriorating in other areas. Also, it uses up a lot of oil - is that typical of the corolla?

what problem is that? only saying gearbox having problem is not enough, for example gears, the stick or even the gear selection joint, but if that costs 1500 that's terrible, try to quote from other garages

if its using oil its got a leak - just wondering if you've run it dry and trashed it. i gather £1500 was from Toyota for a new box. get a reconditioned one - much cheaper. a good dealer would rebuild the box not just offer you a new one.

Have heard of that problem alot with corolla's helped a mate change his got it rebuilt with better bearings 700 euro....... \Is it engine oil that its burning if so that is fairly typical
