Recently I have noticed that the steering tends to stick after reversing, it only happens for a short distance then rectifies itself

any ideas

I think my 04 2.0 D4D also has the same kind of problem. Most noticable for me though when it the engine is cold in the morning.

Basically when I try and turn the wheel to lock I hear a high pitched slipping noise (like a fanbelt slip or motor working on empty). The steering wheel always stops before it reaches the lock. Then I have to turn it to the opposite lock and get the same effect (doesn't turn as far as lock.). After a few of these lock to lock turns the noise dissapears and I can turn the wheel from lock to lock freely. The car is not due in for a service for anouther few months, but its a bit disconcerting to know that there could be a potential steering failure on the way.

Belts slipping and stering sticking are diffrent problems ;)

I know that they are different  , just trying to describe the sound I was hearing......car wise the closest sound I have heard to it was the slipping sound a fan belt makes.

ok an update. I took off the engine cover this evening and the steering fluid level looks to be a bit on the low side. I topped it up to the level marked on the resevoir and the sound seems to be gone. I'll let you know how it goes over the next few days, but I think that this could be the solution for the stickiness. Might be worth checking your fluid level carday.
