Avensis 2.0 Auto 1999

Hi, my avensis developed a fault coming home from work on wednesday. As I pulled away from a set of lights the car reved high but didn't really move. I eventually moved off but came to a halt further on as I'd lost all drive completely. I turned off the ignition and then on again, put it in drive and slowly pulled away, if I went too fast the same thing happened and lost drive.

I made it to the toyota dealer in leicester and left it there overnight, the mechanic rang me in the morning to say they don't know much about automatics (!) and a new gearbox would be £3200. I arranged for the car to go to a local auto specialist where they ran a diagnostic on it and it came up with a faulty speed sensor in the gearbox. This is going to be replaced at a cost of £142 + fitting + vat. The mechanic says that this may only be masking the real problem and that the gearbox may still need to be replaced/reconditioned. They offer reconditioning at £1695 + vat. Which is more than the car is possibly worth. My car has done 94 thousand miles.

Am I better off scrapping the car now or paying for a reconditioned box at more than the cars worth then running it, hopefully trouble free, for 5 years or so?

Any advice gratefully received.

Tony.
